It's not possible 'officially' the IET digital package requires a Windows based software package to open the publications.

The only way to do this and get around copyright is to purchase the hard copy of the onsite guide then contact the author and request permission to scan in every page of the guide and PDF it. Therefore you can upload it to your ipad/iphone/androde/blackberry/windows phone as a PDF. That will also give you a search feature.

Of course you wont be able to sell it or give it to anyone else due to copyright. But will most probably suit your needs.

You may have to provide a receipt for the hard copy and also state that you will not sell it or provide anyone else with a copy.

Keep the reply from them encase you have any problems in the future.
They might even have a PDF copy they can provide you with - worth asking.

Im not to sure if you can directly copy a document/publication if you own the original hard copy and you want a soft copy for YOUR own use.

I can't see the IET going for it somehow.

Its worth asking - thats why i said buy the hard copy and provide them with the receipt.
They have made their money already and your just making it more readily available to yourself when you need it.

Explain that a hard copy is not suitable the majority of the time due to dark conditions, working enviorment, etc, etc.

At worse what are they going to do - charge a fee.

Even if they say no, whats the harm???

Just checked the copyright law - you can create a copy for your own personal use. - so no need to request it from IET

8. Acts that are allowedFair dealing is a term used to describe acts which are permitted to a certain degree without infringing the work, these acts are:
 • Private and research study purposes.
 • Performance, copies or lending for educational purposes.
 • Criticism and news reporting.
 • Incidental inclusion.
 • Copies and lending by librarians.
 • Acts for the purposes of royal commissions, statutory enquiries, judicial proceedings and parliamentary purposes.
 • Recording of broadcasts for the purposes of listening to or viewing at a more convenient time, this is known as time shifting.
 • Producing a back up copy for personal use of a computer program. ****************************************************************** THIS ONE ALLOWS IT!
 • Playing sound recording for a non profit making organisation, club or society.(Profit making organisations and individuals should obtain a license from PRS for Music.)

all the reg's books are available to download from the IET siteHome - IET Electrical you can view them on your pc or your i-phone. if you join the IET you will get a discount on both hard back and e-book versions

i already have hard copys, but i'd like to have them to hand all the time and i don't think i should have to pay again.
it would just be more convienient for me you see, i would be able to spout off regs and prove my workmate wrong more often, i'm not going to start carrying the books around with me they are too bulky and i'd look like a nerd

Under the copyright regs you can create a backup on the computer for your own use - that copy can be stored on your IPhone.

I know its a lot of work but something to do on a cold long night - lol

i have a copy of the OSG on my iphone now, only problem is it's really slow. i'm using a file viewer i got from installous, i've tried every pdf viewer app available in installous and they were all about the same, and i have also tried other pdfs and they were fine, the problem i have with this OSG pdf i got from piratebay is it's scanned in version, and these are notoriously slow as it spends ages loading up the white background even though it's not necessary.
it does work though, and it's handy for emergencies i suppose.
if i buy the proper version from the IET, how much does it cost?

If you join the IET they offer 2 packages a industrial which has all the guidance notes and the regs for ÂŁ273 or a domestic version with GN 1 & 3 and the regs for ÂŁ136.50.
The full price's are ÂŁ420 & ÂŁ210. you also have the opportunity to get other software at reduced price. It's worth the ÂŁ129 to join as you save more than that buying the books.

I've just checked the IET site. You can get a package consisting of:

 • IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)
 • Guidance Note 1: Selection & Erection
 • Guidance Note 3: Inspection & Testing
 • On-Site Guide
 • Electrician's Guide to the Building Regulations
in e-book format for about ÂŁ136.

Their e-book format supplier (VitalSource) does not seem to explicitly support iPhone, the promise an Android app real soon now.
