Just spent a week at a ÂŁ1m house bringing it up to scratch. We had JB's everywhere and in most cases no earth where they had JB's with no earth connected, one of them we couldn't find!

There was 50 downlights that had to have JB's put on and the lamps downgraded to 35w because the circuit was overloaded.
The photos don't really show how bad it was but it gives you an idea of what we was up against. Everything we undone was like opening a can of worms!

I like to hear about decent tradesmen being kept busy by the cowboys. If it's an expensive house sell them on the idea of doing their bit for the environment and re-lamping the place with LED's.

Warms my heart to see a proximity tester in action as well :)

Im sure they would love to do their bit but they had sold the house and when they got us in to do a periodic that's what we found. There was two of us there mon tues wed and three of us thurs fri. With a deadline of today. Two late nights and we got done in the end.

There was no logic to anything. One downlight with 5 legs spurred off to other downlights all just taped together.
Most of the connections weren't screwed together, just loose in connector block.
Two light fittings in the hallway we had no idea where the neutral came from. Must be in another JB somewhere.

And the proximity tester was used on every cable I touched, was taking nothing for granted in 'the house of horror'

Wish I had used ' the house of horror ' as my subject line :-( haha

What annoys me is that yes, it's rough but it's rough through sheer laziness rather than lack of knowledge.
Agreed, same as the CU I came across a while back, no real reason for it to be in a mess, same with the terminations in the accessories, sloppily done for no real reason and by a qualified (but not registered) spark.
