Tracing a faulty wire through box trunking in a laundrette, got to within 10 meters of the DB and all the wires in the trunking where 10mm earth, when i checked inside the DB the previous installer had used the 10mm earth to run the 3 phase supply to 2 machines out the front of the shop and just put a bit of tape on the ends inside the board as indicators.

OK I’m going to make an admission here. I’ve used 16mm earth as phase conductors as a quick fix when a plants been broken down. It’s all I had to hand at 2am. It was replaced ASAP though.
Surprising what you get up to on nights when the plant manager is jumping up and down, screaming!

It's very common in low voltage stuff as a temporary bodge to keep things going, seen it many times on remote panels etc.
Typical industry reply of "do it tonight,it's gonna get sorted on days".
Which means "Its gonna get done when we finally run out of cores to use then end up strapping a spare core over the top to keep it going and someone complains!!!".

Also, there are DC motors in my factory now where 3 core 25mm SWA was used to power remote DC drives and the yellow phase has been used as an earth, very confusing when testing if your not familiar with DC motors.A bit of earth sleeving would have helped greatly.
