I am new to the forum. I served 5 years apprenticeship as an Electrician and 30years as a controls engineer commissioning controls. Have you ever come across a heating controller in a boilerhouse, no drawings , no instructions and the Manufacturer can't help cos its obselete.
Over the years I have collected a library full of data sheets, instructions etc.
would you guys be interested in a service where I could e-mail you a copy of a controller for a small scanning fee.
I have even got inverter ones

To be honest even obsolete instructions can be found if not from a member of this site then on the unlimited bank of info that is the internet for free, ive been stumped by obsolete items plenty times but always located the info or got good advice, a lot of the times its in the costumers interest to upgrade to modern anyway if the item is so old as its service has usually been well exceeded.
I know what you mean. The customer wants to know that they can obtain spares next day.

When things are unobtainable or obsolete its time to re-new otherwise you spend hours of unbillable time scanning and searching, most people will accept that old crap needs re-newing at some point and also it makes you more money on the job, bending over backwards can earn you brownie points but it dont pay the mortgage faster, as long as a good job is done you will still be appreciated.

When I looked at the job the customer said the plant was intermittant. He had a quote off one of my competitors to replace it as it was obselete. Because I had the information I checked the controller and found it ok. I then looked elswhere and found the problem to be the pump select switch. The contact retaining bracket was broken and the action of the loom cables were "holding" the contact made every now and then -hence problem.
If my competitor would of done the job, my customer would of still have the problem.

On the strength of what I did the Council Engineer bypassed the 3 year waiting list to be a approve specialist contractor and I am now on the list

Its clear the competitor has a not knowing his arse from his elbow issue, even without instructions signals and voltages missing or present can be checked for and thus problems located although by the sound of it i dont need to teach you to suck eggs, had he changed the unit he will have probably been stumped and then you would have got the call anyway, with you explaining his errors on changing a funtional item then you will have still got a gold star and another good tick on your reputation.
I come across this all the time- other lesser education (stupid) engineers, electricians, maintenance etc been stumped by the basics in control systems changing parts at a guess then getting even more confused when the problem persists.
People shouldnt fit parts if they cant fault them too, an understanding of how control equipment works is the golden key to been able to give a quick diagnostic and repair and lending to a good reputation.
