I have a job to put up an outdoor security light. The light will be fed through a 3 core 1.5 mill cable. I am thinking of running it off the lighting and drilling through to the loft void to get to it. However there is a socket not being used by the door so I was thinking of running a fuse spur off that and simply drilling through the wall and running the cable through some conduit up to the light and doing it that way.

How would you do it and which procedure would you follow?

I havent done alot of installation work so am going to treat this job as a good learning job and do it properly as there is no pressure on so want to get everything right and learn as much as possible.

Which method do you think is the most common? And could one of you lads give me a thorough run down of exactly what you would do using that method? For example as I dont do house bashing I would not be sure about drilling through the wall so advice on which drill bit to use and the best method would be appreciated

All advice welcome

How high do the want the light? If you want a flood shining down from say a gable end quite hight up then the best way would be to get in the loft and pick up a feed from their. However there is also the problem that if the light is uncontrolled (or requires an override) you still need to chase down to put a switch in an accessible place.

Recently I installed a PIR Flood for an elderly customer who wanted minimal mess so I installed the light above her front door, lifted a floorboard upstairs and drilled through into the void between the upstairs floorboards and downstairs ceiling as it was then easy to pick up a feed from the downstairs lighting curcuit. The feed went straight into the back of the fitting so it looked really neat and professional.
