Hi all,

SWA Cable spured from rear of a socket going to a CU in a shed all RCBO running a 58watt tube light, and socket, also running 2 outdoor sockets, the socket this is spured from is on the main ring, and is on the RCD side of the board.

House is Laminate and owner don't want this ripping, up the load on the outside will be no-more than about 2800watt at a time so just over 12amps.

asked a few questions and its been suggested that to make it safer to stick a FCU in at 13amps.

Clarification on this please.

Many thanks

just trying to visualise this.

1. how is the SWA connected at the house socket? is it properly glanded and the SWAarour earthed?

2. you seem to have 2 RCDs in series.

3. if the sockets connected to the shed CU are protected by a 16A RCBO, there's no need for a FCU.

4. what csa is the SWA. if protected by the 32A MCB on the house RFC, min 4mm required.

5. how is the earthing of the shed installation achieved?

not to sure on cable size, rather chunky cable, bigger than 2.5 swa.

Rcbo, 6amp lighting, and 16amp for shed. sockets only ever used for
a lown mover or small sound system for garden parties apparently.

well, i would not be happy feeding a CU from a socket in the house. it wants redirecting to the main CU on it's own circuit. if you can't persuade the client to get it done properly, walk away and let bert from down the pub cock it up.

Tel,

this house is familys and was just shown that needed to be done and found this mess.

was just visiting so had no kit with me, from what im told the cable is drilled through the wall how true im not sure but apparenlty was done by a Electrician.

not a clue about the swa been earthed.

theres a 32amp mcb for the ring main on the rcd side of the board in the house, and RCBO's in the shed.

as for the sheds earthing i dont know untill i got back Friday.

bet you'll find the SWA has it's armour cut back and the tails just bodged into the socket. family or not, you got to do it right or not at all.

As long as you can gland and earth the SWA properly, it will be safe to fit a FCU to ensure the cable does not get overloaded. As you say not the way would normally do it, but you can still make it safe to use
