Hello,

I am going to be installing an outside light it will be connected via a fcu and the cable will need to be clipped to the outside wall for a short length.

Is hi tuff the cable of choice for this to meet regs? flex can't be used and nor can t&e because of the detrimental effects of U.V. am I right?.

Arctic cable would be to excessive for this no? also it only comes in yellow, and client does not want that on the side of there house.

Thanks guys.

black or white flex is perfectly acceptable for outside use. it will take years for uv to have a detrimental effect.

Arctic cable can also be bought in blue (230V!) The yellow is intended for 110V but has exactly the same ratings.

That HiTuf is good.

You could also choose NYY, similar but has solid rather than 7-strand conductors.

Simon.

I see white flex on the outside of buildings and was always sure it was a bodge, not sure where I got that from then.

Cheers guys, white flex it is.

i replaced a security light the other day wich was not worken, i tried to take bolt out but was fe cked. there was 1 pir controlling the two lights, but the new 1 they had was fitted with pir aswell. i installed it anyway, so would the new pir (on new light) overide the old 1.

cheers for your knows

wire the feed to the new light direct to the lamp in it's terminal block. most pir floods have a 4 terminal block. wire to brown if using the pir, red if not. as you seem to have done it, both pirs will have to trigger simultaneously for the light to activate

The pir on the new lamp will only operate when the existing pir has switched. Most PIR's have a test mode when first powered up so I would say it will not work. You will need a permanent live to the new fitting.

Thats fine all that will happen is the old one will work then the new one will work. Not a problem.

yeah, he needs to use the new fitting as a slave to the pir, i.e. bypass the pir in the new fitting, so it will switch on with the existing pir.

if the supply to the new light with PIR fitted is t and e or three core then it will only work when the existing PIR has switched. For the new fitting to switch the other fitting a three core and earth or four core flex would be required to give live neutral earth and switched live.
