Outside light

Hi people,
If I spur of the ring main to a switched fused spur to supply an outside 500watt floodlight, when doing IR test do I just IR the cable I have put in (from socket to light)? Or the full ring?

Really?! That's something else i've learnt today! Can't say it's ever going to stop me putting up 500W (well 400W now with the new lamps and all) floods on peoples properties when they ask for one.

I hope this isn't classed as a hijack! But.. has anyone tried alternative floodlights? Are they a decent comparison yet?
I can't honestly see a CFL type fitting with a PIR illuminating an area very well. A CFL fitting with photocell sounds reasonable however.

i'll stick with 500watt halogens. steinel do a LED unit, but it's 6 x the cost.

But will the LED unit payback after a few years? Due to low wattage and no need for bulb replacements.

might pay the customer back in a century. they only on for a few minutes at a time. i'm referring to PIR switched floods. obviously if they are photocell or manually operatede and on for long periods, then i agree. but never found a cfl gie more illumination than a good candle.
