Hi

Recently my grandad, who isn't a qualified electrician but has years of DIY experience and knows his stuff, has installed a security light on the front of the house. It's nothing special - just a lamp in waterproof casing with a PIR sensor bought from B&Q. He took a spur from a junction box in the house's lighting circuit. It all works fine with no issues except a bizarre thing happens every night....!

In the kitchen we have a light fitting with 3 halogen spotlight lamps. Every evening when we lock up and turn everything off, as the kitchen light is turned off, the outside light turns on as if someone is walking past it.

We have googled it but can't find anyone who knows why this might happen! please help explain!

thanks, Dan

You'd be right with the 'nothing special' bit, I'm often asked to install fittings customers have bought from B&Q and they are usually rubbish. Bin it and buy a decent fitting. As long as you are certain the fitting is wired correctly and correct voltage is present I can only think the issue is caused by a change in circuit voltage when the kitchen lights are operated, perhaps this is somehow affecting the outside light sensor.......like I said, bin it and buy a decent light.

^^^ agree with wirepuller^^^

Most PIR sensor lights when current is interrupted will go into test/reset mode turning the light on for the amount of time you've set it at.
