Hey guys, looking at putting some lights in my garden and this is the way i plan to do it;

Swap a normal socket for a rcd one. Plug in a remote device (to switch them on and off via remote) then run 2.5mm armoured cable outside into a IP66 rated box, put a socket on the end and plug the lights in. they are 12v DC spot lights. Would this be ok with regard to safety and current wiring regs??

cheers

Hey guys, looking at putting some lights in my garden and this is the way i plan to do it;

Plug in a remote device (to switch them on and off via remote) Would this remote device be inside or outside ?

then run 2.5mm armoured cable outside into a IP66 rated box, put a socket on the end and plug the lights in. Just a bit confused, by the use of a RCD socket and then a SWA cable. How are you plugging that SWA into a RCD socket..........plug top,Also why such a large cable 2.5mm, is there that many lights

they are 12v DC spot lights Would this be ok with regard to safety and current wiring regs??

cheers

Finally Part P.

sorry should have been more clear

2.5mm SWA used because i have some, no other reason. SWA stop me jamming a spade through it. the romote part will all be inside the house the cable will then run outside into the box where i will wire a standard plug socket on the end and plug the lights in.
The rcd will protect should a fault occur but i would like to protect further buy using armoured.

what do you mean by part P???

cheers

sorry, my bad, yes i have heard of it, but what particular part are you referring to mention it??
the rcd socket will be inside with the SWA being wired into a normal plug.

I am unable to use an outside socket as the the plug for the lights has an inbuilt transformer on the back so i cant close the lid. So thats why i was going to put a normal socket into a IP66 rated box.

thanks for your advice so far.

cheers

?????????????????????????????????????????????????.
how long is this cable for the lighting, not the SWA the lighting cable its self, also how are you going to control the remote lighting? along with its location, is it going on a building in a tree, in bushes on the floor?

i'll start again, dont think i've made it that easy hahaha

I will swap a standard 2 gang plug located in my kitchen for a 2gang rcd one. Into this i will plug this; 4 x REMOTE CONTROL 240V MAINS WIRELESS PLUG SOCKET SET: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home . I will then get my 2.5mm SWA cable and put a standard plug onto one end and plug it into the socket receiver. This cable will then run approx 2 metres behind my cupboards then through my wall. The cable will then be clipped to the outside of the wall then going down under my soil, then continue under my decking. The outside end of the cable will then be wired into a standard 1g socket. I will then plug my lights in (Ultra Recessed Polished Stainless Steel 0.05w, 7050 ) The outside socket will be fitted inside a IP66 box. The length of SWA cable outside my house will be no more than 6 metres and will be no more than 2 metres inside. The lighting cable comes with 5 metres per led light its self. The lights will be flush mounted into the decking. The IP66 box will be under soil bricks and any other garden type soil the wife choose's. Anything else needed guys, to give your opinions??

I do fail to see the reason why the length of cable is needed?

thanks again guys

i get the impression, you think i'm some sort of idiot just wiring some lights into my garden, so i'll keep my mouth shut and just do what i please with my own garden features.

Incase anyone is slightly bit interested i'm not just some fool wiring lights into my garden and although i'm not part P or 17th edition trained i would say i'm a competant person to carry this out. I forgot i've not got 10years exp in electronics and electrical engineering i'm not HND qualified and i have no idea about electrical and electronic circuit theory, even though an earlier thread i read there was an 'electrician' asking what a neutral wire was for????? so cheers guys

Sorry That is got to be the most hideous thing I have seen. You can not terminate a SWA into a plug. This for me now is full stop and I'm afraid my last piece of advicxe is to get someone in that is competant.

ok it may not be the best way to do it, thats why i as asking here if you have any advice? so how about forget SWA i'll use normal 1.5mm flex run it into IP 66 box on my back wall and plug the lights in then??

you can use SWA but not on a plug top. in the house, you could fit a RCD FCU. then SWA out to remote control IP65 socket. then 4 way extension lead to IP 65 box with your leads to the lights plugged in inside the box.
