Hey guys I'm new to the forum stumbled on it searching for electrical jobs, thought I'd share something with you all, my employer has just dropped the no vans bomb on us, apparently to remain competitive in the market, so I'm using my car to get to site now, unfortunately they're not able to pay the jib rate for own transport used either and are paying an allowance for travel which at the current site I'm on equates to about half of the fuel I'm actually using to get there, feels very unfair, are things still that bad?

Re: Mentors Wanted For Trainees

1 Make sure all the guys agree 2 Tell him you want a fair rate for using your own vehicle 3 If he arses about refuse to use it. As long as everyone stands up to him he'll back off. It's an outrageous request.

Mentors Wanted For Trainees

Thanks chaps appreciate the info,
Rmc86 they have a jib number which they use but they pick and choose what parts of the jib suite them, I don't know the full terms of being a jib member, it all feels very one sided to me

Tony I think there's a bit of a grey area there, I'm employed at one place of work (which is whatever site I am on at that time) I'm not paid to use my own car to travel between sites, (therefore not business use) I'm only paid an amount towards fuel above 15 miles as the crow flies from the office (up to 15 miles classed as travelling to work of own accord???) so at the moment I'm getting £9 per day to travel 90 miles round trip which is 10p per mile, rubbish

If they are a JIB member company then they have to abide by the guidelines set by the JIB.

When I worked for a JIB firm a few year back I was only working local and the director asked why I was booking own transport on my timesheet and said that I wasn't entitled to it because it was less than 15 mile from office in a straight line. I said it was only travel time and travel allowance that applied in that case and this was confirmed by the JIB themselves that I was still entitled to own transport rate. It wouldn't be fair for one bloke to have a company vehicle and me use my own car.

10p per mile, rubbish
HMRC allow claims of up to 45p per mile (subject to certain limits) but what you can do is claim the difference ie 45p - 10p per mile on your tax return. I believe you can also claim for mileage within 15 miles of the office. Someone more accountancy based would tell you better than me though, maybe a phone call to HMRC would be a good idea mate

Re: Mentors Wanted For Trainees

If you get JIB expenses for travel there is a form you can fill out at the end of the year to claim the tax back on them expenses.

Mentors Wanted For Trainees

Yeh I'm going to complete a p87 which will affect the tax code I have with the difference of any expenditure I incur, also giving the jib a call on Tuesday see if they're breaking the rules, watch this space

I remember the firm I work for, back when they was struggling had me doing a 100 miles a day without so much as a thank you. I was an apprentice though so I would of done anything they said until I had my gold card.

If your boss is genuinely struggling and has been fair before this. You all could help out for a bit I guess. Hopefully he'll pull through it
