ok, im thick. well I must be. I am gas safe registered, and have been an electrican for year but out of practice) but someone please explaint Part l and lighting to me in a way i can understand.
now i understand watts, equivalent values for energy efficient lights, led's, and so on, but please explaint to me 'lumens'!

is there a maximum wattage of light fitting you can fit in a dwelling to comply with Part l. I see you are expected to get 45 lumens per watt used, or something like that, but would a 40w mains powered downlighter such as a fire stop downlighter comply? most of the rest seems to make sense, but this lumen thing, oh god!

Lumens is a measure of light output along with candelas and Lux.
New regulations are out stating that all lamps sold must give the lumen output.
Then you can divide the given lumen output by the wattage to get lumens per watt, however often the wattage does not cover the losses from ballasts, etc. so may not comply.

all incandescent lamps will not comply; most fluorescent (except as I have just found out GU10 + MR16 CFLs), metal halide and LEDs will comply.
This document may assist in classifying lamps but do not take it as gospel for all lamps.

I think as i understand it, most manufacturers are struggling to produce a fitting that will match the current values with that last change they made. the most i think is about 41L and still under. This was a couple of months ago at a aurora meeting so not sure how accurate that is.
