Evening chaps

I've first fixed an extension and LABC has been round and told the bloke that he's got to have the prerequisite number of low energy light fittings. Never had to bother with them before but this inspector's a proper berk. Part of the extension forms part of the garage which I seem to remember is not suitable for standard fluorescent light fittings due to stroboscopic effects on rotating mnachinery etc.

What am I supposed to stick in the garage then? High frequency jobbies?
anyone recommend some cheap ones!?

You only need to worry about stRoboscopic effect if it was three phase which i assume it isnt, so just put in either normal florries or CFL downlights if suitable.

Nothing to do with 3 phase, it is to do with the speed of rotaing machinary and the stroboscopic effect of a fluorescent lamp which should they be the same will have the effect that the machinary is not moving but is moving thus causing a dangerous situation.

That is why the working lamp on a lathe was a incandescant lamp, the other way is to have a twin fluorescent fitting with one tube leading pf and one tube lagging pf.;)

If stroboscopic effect is going to be an issue fit some high frequency battens. Newey and eyre do some newlec fittings which are rebranded crompton fittings but a fraction of the price.

You could either:
  • Fit high frequency fittings like you say,
  • Include a few incandescent or LED fittings near where the machines will be used,
  • Fit DD pendants 6 inch Energy Saving Pendant then swap them for ordinary ones once the inspector's gone. Make sure you do though because they're proper expensive (£6.50 a pop!)

I spoke to the client today and we've arranged that he's going to buy some low energy pendants and I'll fit them, then he can take 'em back after:D. It seems the building officer just wants to see low energy fittings , he doesn't seem concerned about possible rotating machinery. (there won't be any in there anyway)
