If a ceiling is lowered to accomidate downlights and the original ceiling is left as it is, does this mean that the downlights still need to be fire rated ones as the original ceiling is not changed so the fire barrier is still there no? This is on a domestic propertie to get it's pert p cert.
Thanks

The actual response is a little more complicated and usually it is dependant on your Local building inspectors requirements to sign the building off. However .... general rule of thumb is:-

1, single dewelling (House, not divided to to flats etc) not required to be fire rated
2, multiple dewelling (With concrete fire breaks) not required
3, multiple dewelling ( Without concrete fire breaks) fire rating required
4, Local authority property always required.

Hoods are a pain in the ---, use the fire rated cans (I agree with brightspark above, no relation), basic ones such as the Aurora AU-DLL991 are easy to instal and of a reasonable price, see link.

Aurora - 'Passionate about Lighting'

The fire rated downlight and fire hoods are there to 'reinstate' the fire break properties of the ceiling they are cut into.

Hope that helps

Cheers guys.

I'm still not 100% sure (its been a long boring day at work lol)

The lights span over an old room and bathroom which is knocked into a single story extension. Was told the single story extension downlights dont need the covers / hoods. But the ones in the lowered ceiling will as there is a room above (part of the house). I was under the impression they are only needed if the ceiling had been cut into, reducing it's fire barrier and /or as you said is flats etc.
They guy doing the part p was a moody so and so with a real atitude problem. All the fittings are already sourced so they all match up with the kitchen ones, which incidently dont have any covers as I had a look on a fewto see if they did. If they are needed its a fair wack as there are 11 lol
