Hi guys.

As the title says really. I know installing a new circuit, in this case feeding a garden shed, falls under the scope of Part P. And that replacing a damaged cable on a like-for-like basis isnt, but what about replaceing a length of 6242Y (laid on a flower bed feeding a garden shed), with a more suitable SWA cable?

You don't replace like for like if the original is not suitable for the environment, with regards to BS7671 the concerns in a garden are UV tolerance, water ingress, mechanical damage etc etc .. the very fact the 6242y has been damaged to an extent it requires replacing is evident it is totally unsuited to the install. Swa will be more suited but thought is still required as to the routing of it with regards to garden tools etc, avoidable damage to the sheath could lead to corrosion of the steel wire.

Just note here you can't make a waterproof repair as the existing doesn't comply even to the reg's under which it was installed or to any reg's even in my 26yrs so you are in fact making a circuit alteration by replacing a section of it thus must comply to 17th.

Edit .... ignore the lengthy explain if you were just asking if it was notifiable but regardless it does express what needs to be done to comply... sorry if teaching you to suck eggs i misread you post if this is the case

I shall not even try and answer the question, even if there was a remote possibility that I could with any sort of confidence

So,after many years of the nonsense, here we have a question on the relevance of Part P on an electricians forum where the subject impacts on the trade more than all other trades and yet, even on here, after all these years, this Part P nonsense remains confusing

If us people working in the trade are confused, how much more confused be the GENERAL PUBLIC

Its no wonder its ignored and by-passed,its a turkey and it needs stuffing, its a shame that its just the turkey that is gone by Christmas

Part P notification for work outside is longer required - only applies to rooms with baths or showers or new circuits.

Thanks guys.

I had an inkling that it wasn’t notifiable, but just wanted some reassurance.

The 6242Y was existing and certainly not suitable for its intended use. That cable was removed straight away, and a nice shiny length of SWA (with external glands) cleated to the wall running behind the flower bed. I did ask who originally installed it, to which he replied ‘Oh, an electrician’....me thinks he was lying!

Are you sure this is not notifiable - after all you are changing the characteristics of the circuit (it is not a direct cable replacement as in after a mouse chews through a ring cable)...

But then is it really worth worrying about?
