Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and thought the best place to get some advice would be from joining the Electricians forum.

I have studied and completed the C&G 2330 Level 2 and am currently Studying the C&G 2330 Level 3. I also recently completed the 17th Edition. I do have some experience but I recently got a job with a Controls company so I am not doing as much Electrical based work.

If I may, I have a couple of questions, that hopefully I will get some informed answers on;

1)If you have the C&G 2330 LV2 and LV3, its is also a requirement to do Part P course?

2)I have not started the NVQ aspect on the journey to Sparks Vill. I was recently [2 weeks ago!] told that I have to register with the NIC, Nappit or Elecsa before the new year. (Allegedly..There are going to be some changes on the requirements for membership, and I have been told I would require an NVQ) - I do plan on doing this but it takes time to complete and as my 3 yrs learning theory are nearly up. The thought of another Three years at College to obtain the NVQ is very depressing especially as I am almost finished.

- The Loop hole is having two minor works assessed to obtain a basic membership {{Level B Defined Scope}} and also the 17th Edition. Then as my experience continues I could up date my membership, with the Nic (For e.g.) as I become more competent I can then upgrade my membership.

Has anyone heard of these changes?

Please could I have any advice or be pointed in the right direction?

Thanks in advance John

HI john welcome!

if you are 17th edition qualified then you can apply for assessment for part P but do you really require this if your employed? its a big outlay for test equiptment etc even if you are goin for the defined scope you still require basically the same stuff

also do you have enough experience designing, installing, testing and certificating domestic installations? if your not out of college yet it may be best for you to get a little more experience first, goin it alone straight after qualifying is a steep learning curve i would think

what are your plans?

I would prefer to wait (gain more experience) as you suggest, the problem I have is, if I wait til after December, I would then require the NVQ which I do not have. I wouldn't want to put myself in a situation where the depth is above my experience at this stage. For e.g. say that there are no changes to the registration process I would be quite happy continuing with trying to gain my levels of competency. Just 2 weeks ago I was told I need to do this or its another 3yrs of College :(

Look.....I have gained experience with my employer as well as attending college but i have still some way to go yet before I get all my certs/tickets. That however is not going to stop me from getting part p registered before christmas this year......its about whether you can do it or not as well as attending college etc....The theory sides all very well but will be little use when on the tools......

Just out of curiosty...there was a plummmmber on todays job who informed me that he was 'doing his part P'....I felt inclined to enquire as to what course this was ,as he claimed that once completed he would be able to register with a scam...napit-elecsa-nic...etc.
He wasnt able to tell me exactly what course he was doing, but said it is an online thing....Is this for real?...or was he deluded?...anyone shed any light?..perhaps doing this themselves?

Defined scope is for someone who does basic electrical work alongside their non-electrical main trade, eg gas fitters or kitchen fitters. You are assessed on the particular type of work you need to complete your main job (fitting fcu for boiler etc) and this is all you can do.

Hi All,

1)If you have the C&G 2330 LV2 and LV3, its is also a requirement to do Part P course?
A part P course is only telling you about the building regulation aspect of electrical if you have read and understood the Electricians guide to the building regulations then you would not need the course only to register with a self certification scheme.
Also you would only need part P registration if you are doing domestic work (although some companies ask that you are an approved contractor with NICEIC)

2)I have not started the NVQ aspect on the journey to Sparks Vill. I was recently [2 weeks ago!] told that I have to register with the NIC, Nappit or Elecsa before the new year. (Allegedly..There are going to be some changes on the requirements for membership, and I have been told I would require an NVQ)

I have heard on this forum that the self assessment schemes will be requiring the NVQ3 from the new year but have had no other confirmation.
To register you need to demonstrate your work to the assessor, as well as know the wiring and building regulations, so if you are not doing electrical work at the moment then this could be difficult. I am not sure about the upgrade possibilities but defined scope are usually for plumbers and kitchen fitters who do limited electrical work so not sure if it would work, ring the scheme providers and get the word from the horse's mouth!

Bit vague but hope this helps
