Hi everyone just need some things clearing up about Part p, I am training for my 2365 level 2 doing two evenings a week after this hoping to do my level 3.

After I'm finished training do I have to take my Part P?

what does Part P involve, who needs it?

I've spoke to some of the older lads who have been working in the trade for a while and they think it is just a money spinner and pointless.

Let me know what you think cheers. Steve.

Depends on what you want to do geez. Get registered to house bash and be able to sign off your own work. If it's just for knowledge, you'll cover almost all of it when becoming a full spark.

Part P is a section of the building regulations covering electrical work in domestic premises.
The focus is to ensure quality work and compliance with the building regulations and requires that for significant work that may affect the safety of an installation that the work can be demonstrably in compliance with the building regulations.

Most of the information in that part of the building regulations will be covered in your existing course, you can free download the Part P approved document from the planningportal and if you read and understand that then there is no need for a specific course to cover this information. The "electricians guide to the building regulations" is also useful to cover this information.

If you are going to work in domestic houses and do work that is notifiable to building control (read the part P document) then you would be well advised to join one of the competent person self assessment schemes, this will cost you the annual fee but will avoid you having to pay building control a similar fee for each notifiable job you do.

Well..... if you want to be able to do domestic work, sleep at night and continually not step the wrong side of the law, I'd not go ahead without Part P registration.

The lads are correct, lots of regs are (apparently) pointless and schemes are moneyspinners.

Unfortunately they all exist and it's a lot easier to comply with what exists.

You won't need training for P, you should have enough knowledge to just read and understand it.

It's the ex shelf stackers and pen pushers that need it explaining, as well as the kitchen fitters, bathroom fitters etc.

Just remember Part P is not a qualification. You just need to be assessed by a scheme provider before joining, then you can sign off your own domestic work.
