Just wanted to thank the many members on here who posted advice about Part P Assessments. It has proved invaluable, insightful and reassuring. Even though I havn't been that nervous in a long time.

For those interested I did a CU change and rewire of multiple lights in my own property. My Assessment was originally booked for September but had to be delayed due to the shocking state of much of the wiring in my house. I battled with, among other things:-

No earths to many lights. They were in the ceiling rose's but not connected in the many hidden JB's I found. No Zs reading always made my heart sink.
Upstairs lights wired in singles (or torn apart t&e to more accurate).
Borrowed neutral on landing light.
Class 1 wall lights wired with bell wire.
Switch cables which even the Elecsa man couldn't identify.
A bedroom with three sockets all on different circuits.
7.6kw Shower (now removed) wired back in to 32a breaker with 6mm. Just about OK but very dodgy.

So I lost count of how many Wago's I got through.

To the assessment. Quite enjoyable and felt at ease all the way through. Lot's of questions and answers. I felt this gauged my competency and drove the rest of the assessment. He was also impressed I had the new 7671 and On-site guide (he'd not managed to get a new on-site guide yet).

On to my works. He checked couple of switches. Looked in the CU. Got me to do a Ze test and an RCD test. Discussed other results I had. Some were OK but suspect and he liked the possible reasons and proposed remedial actions/investigations. He suspected an old ring might have been wired in 2.5/1mm which was a new learning for me. Need to confirm that.

Although I got a A I did have one small observation which I corrected during the assessment. My CU design had a separate earth terminal and I missed the "safety do not remove......" label.

Finally, I was not aware that if I'd left this until next year then all my training and study would have been scuppered slightly by the change in requirements to NVQ L3

So once again thank you all.

Well done on passing, no significant observations is a good pass.
Nice to hear feedback on assessments, hope the future work goes OK.
Always good to have problems first so you know what to do next time!

well done on passing, this is good info thanks as i must do mine before end of dec, I'm putting in a new cu at home, my five year old protec cu with a rcd incomer,
going for a split load posh one...
yes the green book might find its way onto my list as he will want to see plans of us preparing for next year. rip of.....
any tips? I'm planning on elecsa myself...

cheers

sounds just like my assesment, Ze, RCD, and also mentioned that i did not have a saftey earth label at the earth block..........was your assesor a bloke called trevor?

Well done mate, I passed my elecsa assessment on Friday as well. It's a good feeling isn't it, but just the beginning of the long learning curve, for me at least.

Congratulations, sounds like you certainly had to get involved with the installation which is a good thing in my opinion as it shows a better level of competency.

Brucelee, you will serve yourself well I'm sure. The force is with you:thumbsup

lol cheers i hope so after all the money and study if not may be last time ya here from me gulp as the mrs may kill me hehe

just trying to ensure i have everything sorted documents wise and knowledge wise

thanks

Brucelee, good luck on Thursday. I'm sure you'll be OK. It's been hanging over me since late July. Just relax and keep the tea flowing (one sugar ;-) looking at your location). It's no where near as scary as I was expecting.

Applemac, get it booked asap. I asked what happens if you're not up to scratch by the year end? As long as you have started the process I think you are OK. But they are really busy for this reason.

Thanks to everyone else. As you say it's great to experience a nightmare installation. I'll try and load some pics for the rogues gallery some time. I think the record for JB's on one light was five between the CU and ceiling rose. And to top it all, today I discovered a cable running diagonally from ceiling to socket right across where a new door will go. The plaster is old and the cable is capped so I hope I can draw it back and run down vertically. So that raises the old question of what do we take responsibility for on a CU change?

The day job won't go just yet, unless pushed. It's weekends and evening for relatives and friends who have been waiting on me for years.

So that raises the old question of what do we take responsibility for on a CU change?

The change of the Consumer Unit and rectification of any faults that are highlighted during test and Inspection. In the ideal situation you would have done the test and inspect beforehand so that you don't end up with a complete nightmare on your hands.

Jump in with both feet and it's likely to bite you on the bottom;)

That's the thing and I accept there is a lot to learn. I thought I'd found everything. Did all the tests on the old board to ensure nothing would bite my butt. Had every socket off to sleeve those earths and all cables 'appeared' to go straight up / down in a safe zone direction. I guess you spend a while running cable detectors over the walls. Then the plumber removed the cover from a boxed in soil pipe (old external wall) and hey presto. As if by magic there's a cable - but not for much longer.

I guess you spend a while running cable detectors over the walls.

Nope!

You cannot be accountable for what you cannot see, you are only accountable for what you do or what you should have done.

If a client happens to find a cable running diagonally after putting up a picture frame then you will not be liable as you did not put it there. You have however probably saved them from a lethal shock/fatal injury as you have made the complete installation much safer than it was previously by protecting all circuits with a 30ma RCD.
