SRE

Thought you might be interested in my flirtation with Passiv Systems.

In the summer we lost out on a job to one of the big solar firms who were doing a hard sell on Passiv Systems (sold it for an extra 2k and also sold vo for £500 - guy has incoming voltage of 237!). I got the details and thought it looked interesting. The sales guy I got, promised all sorts of statistical data to back up their claims of 23% saving off heating bills and I thought it would be great in rural areas on it's own without the pv and had the potential to keep us going over the winter with work. I won't bore you with the details, here's the shortened version.

Had to order 10 systems, they were expensive but I could see the potential and knew we were going to be quiet through the winter.
Had the training on site - which was good.
Installed ours during the training - had quite a few teething problems and ended up paying our local plumber £300 to sort out our heating system.
The wrong operating instructions were sent out with the 10 systems but we all make mistakes and this was eventually rectified.
Have repeatedly asked for problems to be resolved, statistics to back up their 23% claims and support for our own installation and unless I've refused to pay their invoice I've found it hard to get any sensible answers from them. I seem to get half way with a solution or answer to a query but never quite get to the end of it.
I still haven't had figures to prove the savings suggested - they only seem to have tested the system on 2 oil properties and the system they have tested on about 30 (still not a lot) gas systems is available installed from British Gas for £199 if you're a customer and £229 if you're not. There are some differences but not enough to justify the huge price difference.

My last email to them on the 24th August suggested that I could keep the system installed, return the other 9 and monitor our system (oil) on their behalf or return 5 and keep 5 systems has been completely ignored so today I've sent 9 systems back to them and will only pay for the system I have had installed.

I'm disappointed, when you get to speak to someone other than sales they do seem to know what they are doing and their intentions seem to be be well meant but I'd not be confident that after installing there would be back up for my customers, therefore they have been returned.

Thought you guys might appreciate my experience - just in case you were thinking of going down a similar route. Or perhaps you've been there and I'm being a complete numpty and it's just me!!

Yes got our first one to do and just about to go to our existing customers to offer - a lot have combi boilers though but still a great option.

My colleague spoke to Immersun and apparently they want to start making people order a minimum of ten units at a time, this wont work for me I'm afraid

That's a u-turn, one of the key reasons for them doing it one at a time is because they were frustrated with Passiv only selling a minimum of 10 systems.

I'd assume it's to do with handling small orders and commitment from installers. I don't know why they don't just put them through wholesalers if that's the case and we could order from them for slightly more but on the same basis that we buy other stock.

I think they're struggling to process orders etc, as well as dealing with technical inquiries from individual electricians doing a one of job and members of the public who've managed to buy direct / buy from a wholesalers.

They're only set up as a company to deal with relatively low volumes of these inquiries, and order processing. If they were to be able to cope with higher volumes of these individual inquiries they'd have to employ a technical sales team to handle it, as well as additional order processes, which would probably bump the price per unit up by £50 or so.

I'd think they'll be reasonable about it if you're wanting to be listed as an installer with them and expect to order significant volumes, eg 10 or more, over coming weeks and months.

I can have a word though and find out the sketch, as I'm currently reviewing their payback calculator for them.

@SRE sorry to hear of your troubles with Passiv Systems - I know you had good hopes for it.

On the ImmeSUN front we buy ten at a time, so it's not been an issue for us, they are flying out the door, - been keeping my sparks busy anyway:) To get a discount you have to buy 50 units, and then those that do have been offering them at the normal price to installers, the following wholesalers will sell to an installer at the usual installer price, and some also offer credit:

1) Segen
2) Rob Eavis t: +44 (0)1246 262721 | m: +44 (0)7899 068023 e: [email protected] | w: www.fusiongsource.com
3) Or worst case you could buy from The Green Electrician outfit immerSun

Was chatting with Lee @ 4eco earlier today and they are run off their little feet producing them as fast as they can.

Also in the pipeline some mods on the case, software and a wireless CT, software may take a little longer, so for the case mods - of note we have not yet used the cable glands on the base on any install - we've asked for knockouts on the top left, bottom and side because to date we've been coming in through the slot on the back, which means we have to space it off the wall a bit more, and then putting the cable in T2 or T3 trunking to keep it all neat.

We use T3 if we're also using the relay - done that and installled dedicated circuits and electric radiator panels on a few sites. - We've used these: Dimplex DXLWP800 Low Wattage Electric Panel Heater,800 Watt: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home, these, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dimplex-PLX...r_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1348782531&sr=1-1 and these: De'Longhi HHP1500 HHP1500 Mica Panel Heater with 1.5kW Output & Wall-Mounting Kit: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home - it's our oil customers that like this addition :)
The convector panels are better that the Low wattage ones as they use more electricity and pump the heat out quicker - yes I know it's not usual to ask for items that use lots of leccy, however we want to use as much as we can when its available, so they have to be quick at cooling down / passing the heat on - if that makes sense, the people at Dimplex were really helpful in finding the right units, no electronics, no timers etc., and we did have a lot of different heaters here from various maufacturers to see which ones worked best (Amazon's returns policy came in really useful there :) ) Beware these panels do get very hot, I wouldn't put them where a small child could touch them, and I have advised and demonstrated this to the customers accordingly.

On the marketing side we've found that leafletting is a waste of time - and it's been pretty easy to target - is there PV on the roof :) and that best is email shot, phone call or referral.

Scary thing, EVERY site except one that we've visited that was not one of our installs would have failed an MCS inspection, - the one that was compliant was a member of the public that had asked this forum for advice and help!!!
