Pat testing of110v 50meter 2.5mm extension reels they are brand new can I pass them or do I have to cut them in half so they are 25 meters long ??? Help

Put it like this IF you cut my nice shiny new extension leads in half i would never give you any work again, either pass them or omit the from the tests, you really cant chop them!

Page 79 of CoP states maximum recommended lengths NOT RCD protected. Stated lengths can be exceeded if RCD protection is provided.

Do you agree?

Not totally

Why would you put an RCD on a 110v supply if these leads are used on tool transformers with the secondary centre tapped to earth the voltage to earth would only be 55v

The volt drop over 50 mtrs on 2.5mm and 110v supply would be 5.50 volts (5%) if it is operating an appliance drawing a maximum of 672 watts, anything over 672 watts it would need to be stepped up to 4mm. I think this is right, but don't take my word for it I'm probably way out! lol

No need for an RCD, Im guessing the reel extension will be used on site so running from a Generator..... The site lighting is designed to be daisy chained over 100's of meters, I shouldn't worry about it, as long as you're earth continuity readings are below the expected maximum, then pass it.. As a general rule of thumb, I use .01 Ohms per 3-feet of flex... this would give you a max reading of something stupid like 16 Ohms, but you'll end up taking a reading somewhere between .28 - .47 Ohms I imagine.

The most important checks on these is visuals on the trailing sockets/plugs, visuals on the primary insulation for damage, and condition of the pins/connectors as well as terminal connections within the plugs/sockets.

RCD's for leads over 30 metres are for 240v supplies, and factored in because in effect you are extending the ring final/radial circuit by 30 meters more than the original design allowed for.
