Evening all! what pat tester do you reccommend? i'm after something low cost and easy to use, has'nt got to be too special as its only for testing a few items in rental properties

Better off buying something second hand if you can or I have seen a few products that you attach to your 17th edition tester whcih gives you all the tests needed. Google it and you should find a few to choose from.

I've seen the kewtech one attachment, are they any good?i was looking at a kewtech pat tester last night too but itsÂŁ350, not too bad i suppose and it will pay for itself eventualy, i don't fancy buying second hand

Never tried them we have the megger pat 4 but then we do a lot of testing as the Mrs can test as well. ÂŁ350 is a lot to fork out for a few holiday lets and do you want to be turning dowm electrical work because you have pat testing to do unless like me you get the Mrs to test.

The other option would be to see what the hire charges are and arrange all the testing at the same time and remember unless you get a few construction companies on your books the testing will as a rule once a year.

They're ok but you can build one from a trailing socket and some old test leads.
That's what I did, my mate brought a Kewtech one and I just copied the connections.
Unfortunatly I can't remember the connections (not well enough to publish one here anyway!).
I will get hold of the unit and let you know the config if your interested.

I also use mine as a R2 wander lead attached to a small extension lead, the NIC assessor was quite impressed with my self build kit (so i can't be to bad)

Well...

If I can remember correctly (don’t sue if I’m wrong!!)….

You’ll need

1 trailing socket
2 old test leads

Cut off the PROBE part off the test lead and discard,
leaving the lead with the 4mm (I think) plugs (the ones that plug in to the multitester / multimeter etc)

You’ll need to join 1 lead to the Line (Live / Phase or what ever it is this week) AND neutral.

The second lead goes to earth

Now just follow the testing instructions on the Kewtech website!

Oh yeah looks easy to do, cheers for that, i'll probably get some 4mm sockets and fit them to the side of a trailing socket, be just like the kewtech then more or less

The problem with that is that you can only do the test at 200mA or whatever current your low-resistance ohmmeter supplies. The Code of Practice suggests a current of, from memory, I think up to 26A. That's a fair difference.
