Hi all,

I am a Mechanical Maintenance Technician and I currently have my 17th Edition Wiring Regs and my C & G PAT testing certificates, I work for a successful company however I am contemplating setting up a small PAT testing business in my spare time!

Has anyone been in this sort of situation??? Is this a viable option and if so what steps should I take???

Any and all advice would be most greatly appreciated!

Best Wishes!

Paul

Thing is you will be going up against the stick the label on brigade who will quote 50p an item and it is hard to better that.

If there is a market near you for PAT then of course give it a go. The instruments are not cheap, of course depending on what you want. Then you need insurance. Again depending what you spend on the instrument you will need to keep the existing inventory and registers upto date or if it's a first time then start them.

I think you will find that apart from a few specialist guys on here PAT is a sort of add on for their existing contracting business. I know I rarely tendered for a PAT contract only as I could not beat the 50p merchants. But I was sometimes asked by landlords or letting agencies that I got a PIR for to PAT test the appliances in the let.

Don't let what I write put you off though, just before you start going down the road of paying out money, make sure there is a market that needs you

Hi Paul,
I fully agree with "malcomsanford" I'd also mention: It's all about how well you market yourself, I'd advise targeting your business towards new clients that don't already carry out PAT Testing. As long as you provide a professional service and remember to quote for retest a month or so before it's due, there is no reason the company would shop around.

Eventually you will have to compete with the 50p brigade but if you have a solid client base, this shouldn't affect you.

I wish you all the best,
