Hi all im a fully nvq level 3 am2 17th edition, jib electricain and im considering doing the pat testing course just wondering on public liability insurance how much i will need to carry out this type of work? and also pat testing equipment if anybody does this type of work.

Depends on how much writing you want to do if you dont mind go for the lower end of the market. If you want all your results printed out for you then go for something like the megger pat 4 with the powersuite software and scanner.

Thats a lot of money for what is boring work and as the employees of Bogit and Scarper are all charging around the 50p to 70p per item after spending around £1500 on kit thats a lot of work just to pay for the kit you bought.

As for PLI dont know what the price is really as Ive got Electrician/PAT Tester together on one policy.

Hope taht helps

Chris

You don't necessarily need a dedicated PAT tester. It's acceptable to just use your combined continuity/insulation tester, multifunction tester or whatever you would normally use for testing installations. As already mentioned the main advantage with a dedicated PAT tester is the printed labels etc and also the fact that you can use it to check continuity using up to a 20A test.
I've used an expensive Robin PAT tester but, personally prefer just to use my Megger 1553. All down to personal taste really.
