I am about to sit a PAT testing course in September, is there any think i need to learn to help me on my way?
When i pass what would be the best type of tester to buy ???

I have the megger PAT4DVF. It’s a bit pricey, but as it down loads the results it has saved me loads of time.

I cant recommend it highly enough.

Thanks ian it looks a good bit of kit. when i have passed my test i will look in that that megger, and see ifi can get a good deal :)

I will be new to the game and need all the help i can get. I don't even know the going rate for testing? any helpful comments will be greatly welcome

What are the reasons for doing this, if you are new to the game I would not suggest this is a great way of making a living, not saying it can't be done but colleges are handing out pat testing quals like there going out of fashion. So therefore the "going" rate can be anything as low as 75p per item and most would agree that there are allot of people out there who are just sticking green stickers on things without proper test as at 75p item to make a profit doing things properly would be hard going.

Unless you know you can get in with some companies as its more about who you know with pat testing IMO.

I am doing this on the side of doorman work, also im trying to train as a full time sparky. this will help me pay back the person teaching me the electrician trade as he is not a PAT tester and i will be, i also have NVQ lvl2 in electrics which i think will help me in basic knowledge, I agree there are ppl sticking green labels on for no money and with no testing making it harder for real ppl to make money.

Not in my opnion, the time it takes the bluetooth to link up with the printer and occasionally it freezes forcing you to turn the machine off and re-boot it. Then when it finally does print it takes an age, just like watching paint dry somtimes!!!
Far easier writing your own labels out, it just depends how much information you need to write. Do it right and all you need is your initials and the number of the month.

SIMPLES!

I have the Fluke 6500 with a barcode scanner and the software to download. Stickers are bought in, all I have to do is add the date.

Barcode scanners from the PAT suppliers are extortionate, get the same one from a scanner supplier.
