Afternoon all , just a quick were doing some work on a scout hut and a sparky has just told the owners they don't need there appliances PAT testing.

is he right I sort of assumed they would have to be

cheers boys and girls

It's not a legal requirement but testing is part of the overall 'maintenance' and keeping equipment safe to use thing...........if you get my drift:)

If the Scout Hall is used by a multitude of parents, helpers and leaders I would be recommending the testing be done.

According to the new code of practice (COP), PAT testing is to be done on a risk based assesment of the appliance(s).
If an item is used and moved often, then it should be tested more often, but an item, such as a printer in an office, which does not get moved, would require testing less often.
If the general public are going to be using the appliances then I recommend a test at least twice yearly.
McDonalds test their kitchens every 3 months, so as you see, its all risk based assesments.
Have a read of the new issue of the 4th Edition of the Code of Practice.
