So my friend is finishing his level 2 soon and was wondering what he should do after the course, people are saying he should of went on an apprenteship but he couldn't afford the wage drop, so basically what does he need to do now to become a fully qualified electrican going through the path of going to college. I don't understand myself

level 3 then nvq3 and AM2

Ok cheers mate that's good news for me and him

As a minimum you need level 2 & 3, NVQ 3 and AM2 to be graded as an electrician

level 2 & 3, NVQ 3, AM2 and 2394/5 to be graded as an approved electrician

If you have level 2&3 you only need to do the bridging unit, portfolio and AM2 to gain the NVQ3.

If you go down the apprenticeship route you only need to do the NVQ level 3 2357 to be graded as an electrician as this is like an all in one qual that cover levels 2&3, portfolio and AM2.

The apprenteship would be easiest but we would be able to afford to drop to about ÂŁ150 pw so night college is only option really, do u know anyone that went the college route?

I did 2 days a week at college and a good mate of mine did 2 nights a week at the same time at the same college. Took him 18 months longer to complete all the same courses. On the positive side of doing night school, you have more time in between classes to absorb and review what you have been taught. His grades were a bit better than mine but he is a bit of an egg head lol. He is now a part time tutor employed by the M.O.D. so it just goes to show that it is about the person more than what route you have been given.

(just having a little rant).....And once you have completed the Level 3 & 17th, now bring on all the other hoops! 2391/(2394-95), CSCS & ECS + JIB, IPAF, Pasma, Asbestos awareness, working at heights/harness and recovery course, working in confined spaces course, First aider and now it looks like I have to get a site supervisor qual for the next couple of contracts!

Sick of jumping through hoops just to make a living.

The issue comes from needing employment in the field to actually finish the level 3, which is the issue in currently trying to address, preferably before I actually start level 3 in September

Yeah, I looked it up afterwards, because he told one of the other students something changed, but the main purpose of the course seems to be so that people can actually get into the trade without having to find work.
I'm going to assume the tutor's just mixed up or something
Definitely removes a LOT of stress, one thing needing to work in the trade for progression, another when it's "you're not going to qualify until you're working" haha

You need to work for your NVQ L3, are you sure that's not what your tutor said as it's quite a substantial point for him to get wrong, and he does this for a living so he'll know the requirements of the course inside out I would imagine.
