Hi all, has any one tried the likes of pay leven for taking card payments from customers? Have you had good or bad experiences with the service? I noticed the stand last year at the elex show so presume they must be fairly legitimate and have been recently considering giving them a try as I'm sure a lot of my customers would most likely use credit cards as there preferred method of payment given the choice. They're % seem fairly reasonable and the fact they don't have an on going service charge seems ideal. Just can help but wonder if there's some kind of catch as it seems fairly straight forward and simple?

I've never used one of these services but I have looked into a few recently. With Payleven you buy the card reader to use with certain smartphones then pay 2.75% per transaction, with no ongoing fees, https://payleven.co.uk

Similar services include:
https://SumUp.co.uk
www.iZettle.com/gb
https://mobile.WorldPay.com

SumUp offers a free card reader. All four work in a broadly similar way though there are lots of small differences.

A completely different payment method is Barclays Pingit. If your customer has a Barclays current account and a smartphone they can do a direct bank transfer to your account (with any bank) just by entering the amount and your mobile no into their app. You both receive a free text to confirm. If you (the recipient) are already registered it goes straight through, otherwise you get 24 hours to register.

Thanks guys I hadn't even thought of asking customers if they bank with Barclays ping it seems a great idea. Just need all the other banks to start doing the same. It's very temping to try these modern chip and pin systems out but I do wonder how much customers would trust swiping there credit card on my phone. I think ill just stick to cash cheque and the ping it idea for now.

Grant i do a lot of small repairs and most people under 50 that is, and all do internet banking so instead of them giving me their details I give mines and it works as they just transfer it straight into my business account and I get return jobs as they have me set up in their bank account and cannot be ar$ed using someone else

I agree that online banking is a more straight forward way than paying by card. It would be even easier though if all banks worked like Barclays. You don't need to give out your bank details and you get a message when the payment is transferred.

Depending on the work you do, some customers may prefer to pay by card. It this is just for the occasional job then the SumUp service could be useful as it costs nothing except when you use it.

Outside of London Edinburgh has a lot of finance and no one I have done a job for has offered to pay by card when it comes to payment I get the same comment sorry I don't carry a lot of cash how can I pay ? and I just hand them my business card and write the bank details on the back and its in the account the following day. This is the way to go as they have proof of payment and I am not having to waste time standing in the bank waiting to get served
