Hi there,
Before I start let me say that my knowledge is BASIC, so please stick with me...

OK,
I have a lamp design that I wish to sell online to the markets mentioned.

the lamp is a ceiling suspended lamp that has no metallic elements [and therefore needs no grounding, I think im right in saying]. The design aspect is the shade and I want to utilise something of the shelf for a pendant lampholder.

Now, in the UK and Europe we use E27 bulbs, that draw on 240V mains. I want to be able to have my lamp used in the US and Japan also.

My question is, as I am not using a plug and fuse, can I just sell my lamp with a standard
UK Lampholder [E27] for use in the aforementioned countries?

I know america and Japan use E26, but have read that E26 bulbs can be used in E27 lampholders. If this is true, then all I need to know is if it is ok to wire my pendant lampholder into a 100-120V mains?

any help on this matter would be much appreciated. I no my questions are naive, but I want to ensure that the product [my lampshade and off the shelf pendant lampholder] meet the necessary requirements and that my lamp [or anything else - people/houses] does not go up in flames

Dan

the pendant cable is rated at 230v 50hz, so i cant see any reason why it wouldnt be able to handle the drop in voltage.
i dont know wether it would have to comply with their standards though? ie: we have our kite, british standards, european standards which our products must comply with.

@chris:

thanks. If it was a 220/240V lampholer though,
wired into 120V mains, that would mean a 240v bulb
would hardly light. Don't know if at 120V bulb through the same
lamp holder..?

I've tried looking for a 120v US lamp holder to see if I could
fit those for American customers but can't seem to find them anywhere..?

And of course, meeting standards would be paramount. Perhaps it would be
better to sell them as BS standard and inform customers of the need to
adapt for use...

@crosswire: the lamp won't help things. It's a matter of the wiring, fixtures.

i just read it that that you're going to use e27 lampholders to accomodate e26 lamps.
giving you the 240v fitting with a 120v supply to a e26 120v lamp.

actually on an after thought and by pure chance were fitting an imported american chandelier tomorrow, which hasnt been modified yet, so ill have a better understanding of what type/size lamps american lampholders can accomodate.

Your right...bit of a muddle.

Ideally I find e26/120V lampholders usable for US
market.

Even better a ceiling rose/cable and e26 lampholder
kit, so I can use with my lampshade.

Any helpful sources in the uk or to import would be much
appreciated.

Will look at eBay, but need to ensure they are in constant supply

id maybe try some of the sponsors on this site mate

Had a look...and haven't found any.
Although most are .uk companies, and therefore aren't likely
to supply 120V lampholders, especially in kit form with cabling
and ceiling rose.

Will keep looking though.

So, no luck finding suitable sources for E26/120V lampholders/kits...

My idea now is to sell the lamps, with a clear indication that the lamp holders are non UL listed, and are certified to british/EU standards only and require adaptation for other markets.

so started looking for ES27 lampholders [so that they can be used in US with E26s] in plastic/or pendant E27, and I cannot find any anywhere..

if anyone knows of any it would be a huge help.
