Hi i'm new to this forum,

I've been looking for any information on the PEO Electrical courses most colleges teach now, to replace the old C&G courses. My college has told me that because C&G has withdrawn from college based learning (except via apprenticeship route) that these are my best option. My problem is i've seen no mention of these courses anywhere by those in the industry, i'm fully aware that to complete my training i'd need an apprenticeship, so does that mean PEO Quals are not recognised by anybody? Are they useless bits of paper or would they help me to find an apprenticeship over someone who has 0 qualifications at all?

I've looked around and most colleges around the country offer these PEO quals as a replacement to the old college based C&G ones, I just cant find any mention of these qualifcations in the industry itself!

I've completed the first year and i'm going back to do the 2nd year in September. If anyone has any information for me to say i'm not wasting my time or money that would be great! (I have to pay as i'm an adult learner)

When you say PEO im presuming you mean "Performing Engineering Operations" ?

I took this PEO back in 2003 and only completed level 2 as they abolished it in favor of C&G 2330 level2 & level3

Id recommend to go with the C&G 2330 rather than PEO, because as you say it is more recognised

Ask the college to prove how they can make you a qualified electrician when you complete the courses with them

You could maybe find some data from the JIB website as to what you need to become a qualified electrician, as far as i know its levels 2&3 2330 and level 3 NVQ 2356 along with a AM2, i have all these barring the level 2 2330 as i had done the PEO like you mentioned above

Yes I do mean Performing Engineering Operations, however i've googled the course and most colleges now teach this INSTEAD of C&G and and according to my tutor (himself an electrician), C&G are pulling out of all college based trade skills in favour of apprenticeship only schemes. PEO Electrical replaced C&G at my college 2 years before I started learning there and while I was on the first year of my course I learned that this was the last year they would be teaching C&G in Plumbing as well. I am lead to believe all trade skills based in colleges that used to be accredited by C&G are being phased out as C&G only want students via the apprenticeship route.

As I said Electrical did this 2 years ago, when I go back this year anyone starting a plumbing course will be doing PEO Plumbing and not C&G plumbing. The way it's been pitched to us by all our tutors is it's C&Gs decision to pull out of all college based learning except for those entering via an apprenticeship scheme.

If anyone knows for sure you can still start C&G courses in colleges without an apprenticeship let me know, as far as I know the only people doing this are the dubious "learn from home!" style groups which have a shady history and track record to say the least.

I am fairly new to this, but i teach NVQ level 1 and 2 electrical, and the modules are known as QPEO (the Q was introduced this year for whatever reason) this is run alongside BTEC which is done by an external body who come in one day a week. I have to teach 3 mandatory units of questions and answers, Working safely, working efficiently, and understanding and communicating technology. Then there are 3 practical assessments for L1, and 3 further practical assessments for L2. To build up to these practical assessments my students do several smaller practical exercises starting with cable preparation, cable clipping, then onto 1 way lighting circuit, 2 way, then intermediate and so on. I hope this helps you a bit.

Cheers...........Howard

I'm currently doing the C&G route as part of my apprenticeship, and there's a lad who's just started who spent the last academic year doing PEO and my boss was telling me how the PEO is just a waste of time. I can't say i've ever looked into it myself to give my own opinion on it, but that's what the gaffer says anyway.
