So I have just come home for some lunch, and I have a message left on the phone. Nearly 3 minutes of rambling message as to how his sockets don't work, and could I come and look at them. No address or number. Tried 1471 number withheld.

Not a lot you can do, wait for them to call again.
Nearly every person who calls me up for a quote I have to stop hanging up at the end of their call because they have not told me where they live. It's got to be like 90% !! I don't get it.
I get customers to send me a text with all their details on now so I have a record of their call, address, and requirements. Much easier to organise my time that way.

I don't, or didn't like the lies people used to say "my lights don't work not done anything honest" only to find DIY Dave has tried to change a 3 gang switch and cut all the ends far to short.

The problem is a lot of them don't call back. How many potential jobs do you then lose because they tell friends and neighbors etc that you've not got back to them. I'm not going to worry about it, It's just I seem to have had a lot of them just recently.

Maybe worth changing your voicemail message to stress how important it is to leave a number. Perhaps even just say "We Sparks For You Farks Limited, please leave your name and number only and we will call you back at our earliest convenience to discuss your requirements."

Then anyone who is still too simple to leave the correct message then surely deserves dodgy Dave from the pub to do it?

The message already says leave your name and number and I will get back to you. I was thinking maybe just put my mobile number on instead.
The voicemail thing doesn't work. Maybe because we have a PBX, as my wife runs her business from home as well.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make some customers think.
Look at it as a positive thing. You are not getting lumbered with those customers who are either so self absorbed they think everyone should know where they live, or are that thick that they can't figure out you'll need a contact for them. Sounds like a blessing to me.

Why not redirect the house phone to your mobile when your not at home.

Leesparkykent If I divert the phone I will get all my wife's calls as well as mine. When you call us you get a message via the PBX saying dial 1 for my wife or 2 for me.

You can get a virtual landline number for free and call forwarding to your mobile for a few pence a minute. That way you avoid getting your wife's calls but still get to put a landline on your advertising.
