Looking at a laptop for studying and when the time comes; work.

ToughBooks tend to have a good rep but anyone gpt/use one? I know a tablet might be better - Any recommendations?

Do you mean the Panasonic Toughbook? I had one a while ago and it was a great little thing. Had a touch screen and a very useful RS232 port. They tend to be expensive for what they are though. If you don't need the 'ruggedness' then you are better off with a normal (cheaper) laptop.

Yea that, couldn't remember the manufacturer off hand, just that it started with P.

I figure it needs to see me through college, cope with being manhandled by 3 kids under 2 and (hopefully) see me past my L2/3 - I know you'll get better spec laptops for the same price point but durability is a must with 3 kids around (and if it goes with me on any ride-alongs etc)

The one I had didn't have a wifi card. It had a mobile phone card with simm. I ended up getting a wifi card out of a scrap laptop and swap them over. I still think you would be better off with a standard laptop and just keep the kids away. You'd be suprised how much a normal laptop can put up with. Last week I had to pour rain out of a laptop. It went in an airing cupboard overnight and powered up without problem the next day. Had to do the same with my Fluke too.
