Had a phone call to price replacement downlights in kitchen.owner had a pir done and sparky put a code 2 on some non fire rated downlights in a kitchen of a two storey house. They have been in some time and I would probably given them a 4.any opinions would be welcome.

no need for fire rated downlights in a kitchen if the room above is occupied by the same family. only required if above is sublet or different owner/tenant. no code!!!

Telectrix is correct, it's all about breaching fire compartments and an average domestic dwelling is classed as 1 fire compartment because of the big hole in the middle where the stairs are!

Saying that, we only ever install fire rated now, not because of regulations but because the price difference is not so big a deal now.

hi
1.what code on pir would you give for spotlights with no fire protection in a flat or house?
2.when writing an installation cert for a new circuit, if the existing cct's on the fuseboard are not marked what do you write on the circuit detail part of cert?
3.If you cannot find main bondin or water pipe what would you write on pir?
4.if fixed appliances in a kitchen have no local isolator what code would you give?
5.if the 16mm cable supplying fiseboard is ran 10 meters from main fuse and doesnt have a fused isolator protecting cable what code is that??
thanks

1 See posts above but code 2 if separate compartment above.

2 Just write the circuit 'ways' out but leave blank for the ones you haven't installed/added too/altered.

3 No evidence of main protective bonding conductor to water service. Code 2

4 Code 4 for appliances other than the cooker, code 2 for the cooker.

5 Technically no code, it's a DNO requirement but I'd mention it in the covering report.

what is DNO??
i thought if the main is more than 3.5 meters away from meter it had to be protected??

so if a flat had a basement with spotlights init and ground floor was the same flat do they need fire protection or is it only when there is a seperate flat above where you are installing the spotlights.
What code would you give if a ceiling rose bulb holder was missing the plastic cover?
and a cable that has been dissconnected from a power shower and left with tape on it??

Distribution Network Operator.

Each DNO has it's own local rules on meter tail length before protection, ranging from 2-5 metres.
Your PIR should only be concerned with BS7671:2008 and not local DNO rules.
Lenny is right about the 16mm though, I missed that in my initial answer, the DNO fuse size is the deciding factor on that one.

The recessed lights are as above, same property/fire compartment then no need to give a defect code.

The last 2, are you talking about a taped up cable in a shower unit? If yes, code 2.

Is it the actual ceiling rose terminal cover that's missing or just the lamp holder skirt?
Code 1 for terminal cover, 2 for skirt.

Is this an inspection that you are actually doing or are these just examples?

I am doing a dummy pir on a friends rented property and learning how to fill certs and do testing for my 2391 exam
I may have a few more questions
Thanks for advise this website is the nutzzz
thanks IQ

You're welcome, keep asking!

when measuring pscc and ze do you do at the main or the fuse board and what sort of readings should you get on a tns system?

so when doin a pir i dont need to mention about main cable in any way??

what would you write ona cert when installing a main cable from main fuse to meter
do you have to test whole installation
what would you put on cert where it says circuits if not marked??
cheers

You measure Ze and PFC at the main switch.

Ze on a TN-S should be below 0.8 Ohms.
PFC is as per Ohms Law V/R.

You would comment on the meter tails if undersized but the isolation/protection is a DNO requirement, not BS7671 (the subject of your PIR)

You do not touch the cable from fuse to meter, this is the DNO's cable.

On a PIR you locate and identify the circuits, on an EIC you need only document the circuits that you have installed/altered.
