Hi,

i just thought I'd share with you what I have been building this week, I had to lay the base last week etc then build the oven this week.

to put it in to scale, you can put a normal spade in the oven including the handle and it doesn't poke out

Thought it was an Igloo

It was quite straight forward, used sand to form it etc.

yesbyou can cook anything in it, typically you would cook between 450 and 800 degrees for things like pizzas etc, you can cook an entire pizza with everything on it in around 60 to 80 seconds and it is perfect.

the wood is turning up tomorrow so I'll then have a go with it at the weekend.

Very jealous, can't beat a good pizza from a proper oven. Looks good mate.

Very nice job, looks very neat to me. Is the oven double skinned like the traditional Italian type? I've built a couple in years gone by and they're great. We used to have regular DIY pizza evenings where everyone would bring some ingredients and some booze and we'd supply the dough and people made their own pizzas. Hours of entertainment for the kids as well if you have any.

I'd suggest you light a very small fire in it to start with and keep the fire burning for 48 hrs if you can so the oven gets luke warm. Then over another 12-24 hours very gradually increase the heat. This type of oven very often cracks as it dries out but don't worry, small cracks aren't an issue functionally, they're just annoying to look at.

The oven has a 4 inch thick concrete dome underneath it that sits on a 4" thich concrete slab thats also got this special heat retaining stuff in. The dome is them covered with a special insulation thats about 50mm, then you put the bricks on top of that.

I should be able to take it straight up to full heat once it has been warmed through for 24 hours.

The ones that require about a week of slowly heating are the ones that are made from clay inside where you have physically created it from scratch. To be honest, if you can buy a pre formed dome you might as well as it saves a lot of hassle and messing about.

The cooking surface is some kind of fire brick, which is cemented on to the base.
