Discuss Placement availability for NVQs in the Electrician Courses : Electrical Quals area at ElectriciansForums.net

I'm lead to understand that I would need to get some kind of placement prior to doing a course in order to get the relevant NVQ.

My concern is the likelihood of getting such a placement in this recessional environment.

Has it become difficult? What are my chances? Can I avoid the need for a placement? How does this work with crash courses? I would like to do a 1 to 2 months course.

Grateful for any words of wisdom.

The 1-2 month courses are for domestic installers. The NVQ is a portfolio of work and takes quite a while to obtain (~3 years I think). The crash courses don't do an NVQ; they're just to give you the basic knowledge required to do domestic installations safely.

Really? That's very interesting.

At the moment I'm only interested in the crash courses but really I'm looking for recession proof skills. And I want to get skilled up as fast as possible.

You're looking in the wrong area then.

We're all being hit in one way or another, and there are hundreds of people every month doing the courses you're interested.

I've spent 3 years at college, I can't find a job. Look around this forum and you'll see plenty of people in the same boat, as well as people who have done the NVQ, full apprenticeship etc who can't find a job.

My thinking was more or less that people always need electricians/plumbers so that so long as I'm willing to be paid less I can always earn a crust. How true is that? Mostly I want to work for myself. Programmers just get outsourced to India. True for lawyers and accountants also.

They do always need electricians/plumbers. Though at the minute phone isn't even ringing for a lot of people; like I said, if you're looking for a recession-proof job the construction industry is not the place to look.

It would seem in a recession a lot of electricians/plumbers jobs just get outsourced to people whose IT jobs have been outsourced, done a crash course and undercut qualified professionals.
Remember if you can do a crash course in something and get rich quick, so can everyone else, and they'll probably give it a go as well - the only people telling you this is possible are the people selling crash courses.

I'm sure you're not actually planning to be a cowboy, but then most cowboys probably think they're skilled tradesmen.

the crash courses really can`t give you the skills and experience that you need to start up in a electrical job. they will of course give you the cert`s that they tell you that you are now "A fully qualified electrician" but the word missing from their adverts is "Fully competent electrician" to do an nvq you would need to be working alongside an electrician

lol mate there are alot of people out therethat have paid money to the superstars that take your money give you a mickymouse certificate and say off you go matey you are an electrician ive been doing this trade for 8 years have nvq4,nvq3, hnc,2330 leve2,level3, 16th,17th,fire alarm, intruder, access control,cctv-1852, A1 assessor, electronic servicing2 and 3, PLC,Pat testing, design2400 and many other i know im sad lol. The point im trying to make is with all that i would still not say im a top electrician due to the fact that this trade is so vast you are always learning the learning never stops.
im sori if im ranting its just that to achieve some thing that true electrician of old were doing over a period of 6 years as an apprentice my teacher and business partner is 62 years and he a true electrician from a generation that spent more than 2 months lol
The rest of us will hope we can achieve those levels for all those that have spent time i respect!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well said shakerbess well said....there are way to many people looking to make a quick buck out of our industry. As has been stated look around the forum at the jobs board and you will see more people looking for work than companys offering it out. This contry is a joke no were else would people actually believe you can learn a 4 years course in 6 weeks with the hope of becoming competent at the end of it. the new courses from sumit skills are designed to put a stop to these 6 week promo courses and i for one will be glad...

I would like to see the goverment and the people that govern this trade instead of putting in part p when some thing happens to a family member of a politician they should also see individuals who get work done by people that are told they are competent by a business that turn around individuals by taking there money and then sending them out to work place were they are more likely to kill some one in other parts of the world use to look at this country and respect the standard that they trained electricians. The sad part is they keep changing and watering down the qualifications.
The adds that show 6 weeks training for electrician what a joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
