Hi, im new here and could really do with some help please.

I have worked as an arcade machine technician and also have experience with domestic electrical installation both under the supervision of a qualified person. Unfortunately i am now unemployed but as i do not have any qualifications i am finding it very hard to find work.

A careers advisor suggested i do a Part P training course which according to him will allow me to legally carry out domestic electrical installations, so i went on the internet and contacted a few companies but i am now even more confused.

Some companies say i only need to do the Part P to legally work as a domestic electrician. Some say i need to do the 17th Edition. Some say i have to do both and also register with a body such as ELECSA. Some say i have to do the Inspection and Testing course.

I have a little money saved up and would like to invest it in a course if that means i will be able to work as a domestic electrician, but i definitely do not want to waste my money or time.

Can the forum members please help me understand all this and what i need to do.

I have tried searching the forums but to be quite honest i do not know exactly what i am looking for!

Cheers all.

hi mate, u need 17th ed and you have to reg with say napit or elecsa (not cheap), and if i was you i would do 2392 inspecting and testing basic, to be honest its going to cost u say alot to get set up, with tools testing gear and register with a scheme, a lot more then a few hundred pound then there is insurance, and as other guys will say the work is slow at the moment

hi there, as above with course + registering+ assasment of your work,
my advice would be not to do anything such as the 17th or 2392,
from what im picturing at the moment all you can do is wire sockets and lights,
and as you are knew to being a sparks.

if your looking to work as a mate honestly for domestic you shouldnt really need any qualifications.

if you are looking to train up as an electrician my courses i took are:
2330 level2 (done)
2330 level3 (done)
17th (done)
2392 (done)
2356 (to be completed)
2391 (when i feel ready)

Hi Gooner,

I have been looking around at some courses and i should be ok with the costs. I just didnt want to be duped into doing something i dont need to do and waste my money. So you are saying i need to do the 17th edition and 2392 as well as the Part P and that should be enough to register with a scheme (providing i pass their inspection of course)?

Hi Simpson,

I am not completely new but have only worked under supervision, but i am quite confident that i can learn the trade. Rather than working as a mate i would rather work for myself. I will take a look at the list you gave. Cheers

I started writing this thinking yeah i have sussed this out but as i got towards the end i started wavering and now i think i have completely got hold of the wrong end of the stick! But seeing as i typed it out i might as well post it. Please dont hold back in correcting me. Thats the only way i will learn. Cheers!

Ok guys have i understood this properly.....???

Part P (full scope) is a building regulation enforced by the council which basically dictates that certain safety guidelines must be followed by a competent person when carrying out domestic electrical work. If the person carrying out this work is not a member of a governing scheme such as NAPIT, ELECSA etc then he is not allowed to sign off the work himself but must pay the council to have the work checked and signed off. The guidelines are found in the 17th edition regulations.

If the competent person does not want to have his work checked by the council and wants to self certify the work and sign it off himself then he must be a member of a governing scheme who will inspect his work on a regular (annually?) basis. To be part of the governing scheme (depending on the organisation) he must hold a 17th edition city and guilds qualification and his work must be checked to see if he can practically carry it out at the standards dictated in the Part P regulations.

The numerous companies offering Part P training do not offer a Part P qualification (as there is no such thing), but instead offer training up to the standard that they think will make you a competent person as required by the Part P regulations. As there is no strict standard for Part P training, courses between different training companies will not be exactly the same.

its about the building regs what i can remember its not that hard, when i done it you had to get 100% if you got a couple wrong you had another chance to answer them, and if you got them wrong again then i think its a fail, when i done it i got 100% first time, but i would look in too getting some old pass papers, i dont have any
