I know this probably isn't the best place to ask this but thought some of you will have contacts and in turn knowledge of the game.

Basically I'm getting frustrated with lack of opportunities, I've finished my apprenticeship and in the process of finishing my NVQ 3 waiting for the confirmation.

So how is the plumbing and gas side of the industry going? ( I know I should probably join a forum for that so I'm sorry if this annoys anyone)

I'm considering starting again and looking for an apprenticeship as a plumber.

Any thoughts on this route. As I'm confused where to go with my career.

Thanks in advance

I'd go for it. Another string to the bow etc. etc..

We all know that plumbers are good electricians, use all wires in a cable and save the customer pennies.

Seriously. Do it.
Haha true.

I am going to look around and see if I can find an opportunity for an apprenticeship.

Yeah true everyone you come across says " oh can't you do a short course to be an electrician" yeah you can. Go electrocute yourself

I am thinking about doing the same myself. I love electrics but I just dont think I could make a proper living from domestics. Another string to ones bow is always good. Doing both means all your eggs are not in one basket and besides heating is a very interesting subject.

Plus a lot of the tools used for electrical work can also be used for plumbing. Angle drills etc.

Agreed - but every electrician knows that the plumber is the devil reincarnated.

So what happens on-site then if you're doing abit of both?

Do you go with the plumbers number 1 skill - use nicely drilled/notched cable holes for pipes? Or, do you take the electricians view and use seperate holes/routes?

Or if you are doing 'abit of both' do you use the hole for your pipework then turn into the sparky and fill yourself in? lol.

C&G pass marks when I sat mine many years ago were as follows 1&2 distinction, 3&4 credit, 5&6 pass, 7&8 fail=plumber so yeah go for it best of luck lol

Haha I've got to do something nobody seems willing to take me on. I don't think it's because of lack of skills because I'm always honest in what I can do.

Maybe I need to do a five week course they seem to get employed quicker than an apprentice route spark.

Sick of doing basic maintenance at work for just over minimum wage. I want to better myself. I am willing to work hard to better myself too unlike the short courses (sorry if that offends)

You sound like a grafter pitty your not up this end. I think works tight all over at mo. may be a go idea to retrain in this slow patch can't do you any harm.

I've done my Gas course... The equivalent of a DI Electrical Trainee spark I suppose... Well it took 1 month 8-5 on the course and 200 hours field evidence.

I'm not sure about lack of plumbers, but there really is a lack of top end engineers that can diagnose a fault rather than just shooting in the dark and just guessing and changing parts.

Htas is also good money.... Flues etc for log burners

Plumbers are just failed electricians, that's what my teachers used to tell me hahahaha

The electrician who taught me used to say plumbers where labourers with there brains kicked out. Plumber wasn't to happy with me after I said it especially as I didn't read drawing properly and wired a socket in position of rad. Didn't I look a -----
