Is it common to attend a propery with a new PME cut out , to find the main earth still on a rod assume at some stage the supplys been changed ? do the dno not change this over ?

I'm guessing a quick phone call to the DNO will confirm supply ? is this something they should then change free of charge or do i remove fuse and undo the cover to the side and pop the earth in myself ?

If you dont have an earth cable coming out of the DNO supply and you have an earth rod then you have a TT system!

If you have a cut out with no electric call the DNO and get them to sort it.

Dont go messing with their system as there is no way of isolating it and it might not be suitable for a PME supply in its current state!

Call them up - they have to by law provide you with an Earth (unless your on a TT), but then if you dont get an Ze low enough then thy have to put you on a PME system.

Can I ask are you a sparky? as what your asking Im not sure.

Yeah i am a spark , what im saying is i went to a job with what i saw as pme cut out ( DNO supply cable single black cable into the standard grey unit with the section for the earth to the RHS of the fuse) looks like the pole outside has been pme'd but the main earth was still connected to a rod , should the DNO comfirm this is pme ( after the phone call) do they change the earth over free of charge ?

Was just asking as maybe some has come across it and could advise , sorry if i confussed you thought i had put it in simply enough.

When they provide a connection for pme.it can only be used if the bonding etc is to pme standards
Unless they inspect the installation they would not know if it is or isn't
They are not going to do so,therefore they will not change the earthing system

If the facility exists, you are supposed to make the installation comply to the pme standard, inform them and they will come and make the connection and probably charge £ 90 at the last count
You are not supposed to make this connection yourself because only they will have the knowlege of whether its available or not
Connecting an earth to the neutral does not mean its pme.Only they can confirm if it is or isn't,the meutral has to be spiked along the system for it to be pme and we have no way of knowing

Thank you a far more informative and helpful reply than the previous

I've called the DNO out a number of times to look at various supplies, quite often the cut-out will be labelled PME but ain't connected and is in fact TT. On the odd occasion there hasn't even been a means of earthing present, scary.
The guys I've dealt with (Western Power, formerly Central Networks) confirm the supply is suitable and do their business, takes about 20mins, never been charged, pretty painless really.
Not sure if it's quite so straight forward elsewhere. Hope you can sort it without to much bother.

I'm guessing a quick phone call to the DNA will confirm supply ? is this something they should then change free of charge or do i remove fuse and undo the cover to the side and pop the earth in myself ?

If your cut out has been connected by the DNA as a PME earthed supply, there is no problem whatsoever leaving the existing TT earth in place on the MET. It will be acting as another point, on the PME system. If anything ''ALL'' PME cut-outs should have a local earth rod connected to the MET, It's actually a requirement in most of our European cousin countries, ...and makes a lot of sense too!! lol!!
