Welchyboy

So the government are urging all homeowners and landlords to refuse to pay tradesmen cash in hand, as they are stealing from the economy!!!!!!!

They have got some front!!!!!

errm...pay cash or pay an extra 20% VAT....err i wonder?

erm, how does that work? i get paid cash by customer, buy smokes each packet gives the government £5. then i buy beer. eaqch pint gives the government £1+.then a few gallooins of diesel. each galloon gives the government £4. anything left i waste on food.

only pay 20% VAT if you are vat registered... and if your vat registered and accept cash in hand to avoid VAT yes you are breaking the law and i hope it catches up on the said individual..! especially as you shouting about tax evasion on a public forum..! :)

sorry i don't have time for idiots who think the world owes them a living and they can do as they please..! would you go into a shop and steal ?? no !! thought not..RANT over.!

whoa hold on there matey wind your neck in!!, just stating a fact that after swindling hundreds of thousands of pounds of taxpayers cash on expenses scams and letting major co-orporations off millions of pounds of tax revenue in deals, i think they have a bit of a liberty telling the general public not to give the window cleaner £30 in cash when he asks to get paid.

all my work is certified and/or notified or invoiced so working for cash as a sparky nowadays is not really an option

To be honest (pun intended) I think it's fair enough. Charity begins at home sort of principle. No one who accepts cash in hand or tries to fiddle a bit of tax here and there has any right to then moan about banks, the Govenrment, MP's expenses etc.

I pay all of the taxes I'm supposed to, and pay for an accountant to make sure everything is above board. That way I have no worries about anyone checking or looking into anything I do or get paid for. It also allows me to get on my soap box about anything I feel moved to do so for regarding the public purse.

What about tips????

You know a customer pays the bill in full inc VAT then gives you a £5 or £10 for a beer!!

that extra 5 quid is a non taxable GIFT!!! does not appear any where on the paperwork.

i normally turn them down as a matter of professionalism but some times the customer is quite pushy and refuses to take it back..

Still liable for income tax..... just like waiting staff in restaurants (are supposed) to declare their tips?????

Who know's

We don't get them offered very often and like you I don't normal accept.

hmm. like my previous post, albeit a bit tongue in cheek. out of a £40 call-out, government get approx. £30 anyway. leaves a tenner to pay tax on.

Last tip i got was a bottle of whiskey from an old guy that i did a small job for, i thought "ha! they ain't getting none of this" but when i'd drank it all and i was walking the dog i got caught urinating in the street and got fined £40......ya damed if ya do and ya damed if ya dont!!

I think it was the previous government who were doing the majority of stealing/wasting of untold billions but yeah they all do it.
Personally I see nothing wrong with someone, (not me of course ;)) doing the odd cash job to save a good client a few quid. The problem is where you have tradesmen who only trade in cash and take 50 grand of it every year then go and demand a ****in council house and generally cream the government for every unemployed handout going.

Now these people should be put down.

Absolute nonsense, keeps the legit guy out of work.

We live in a time where the economy has been absolutely crippled by corrupt politicians and bankers and yet it is the people on middle and low incomes and small business owners who have to pay the price. Personally I think the way public money has been squandered pathetically over the past 10 years, just to buy votes, (mainly by labour) is, in itself, absolutely criminal.

In all honesty, I avoid cash work, as not being VAT reg I am always expected to give a discount, meaning the benefit is almost entirely for the client. I can say though, that I do not know a single tradesman (and I know a lot, the vast majority being thoroughly decent blokes) who has any moral obligation to taking a bit of cash from time to time and not declaring it, and I have no objection to this, it is after all, every man for himself out there.

Every man for themselves is one thing. We all have houses to pay for, wives and family to feed. A level playing field would be nice. Skimp on tax, insurance, bonding, part p (if required), earth sleeving, testing and the rest. Legit guy ain't got a chance as the overheads are vast.

We could argue for a long time as to why economy is crippled, that's another thread or host of them. Cash work isn't gonna help it.

Im not justifying rough work just cos its cash, and yeah im sure lots of people lose the odd job to someone who does rough work but its not something I personally have ever had a problem with. If I wasn't part P registered I would not get even a third of the work I do (unless I was very good at pretending to be.) The sparkies I know still Issue a cert for a cash job and do it all properly.

That bit made me chuckle..... did a board change about 4 years ago ....ended up being a 3 day marathon hunting the fault ... job went from 300 to 600-odd ..... fault was NO earth sleeving on cooker feed (on back of cooker, which the kitchen had been built around of course, literally!) - it was just touching the neutral bar. Intermittently. And therefore setting off nice new RCD board.

That tiny piece of sleeving that was skimped on probably ended up costing them 300 quid.

p.s. just to qualify, there were many faults to be cleared, it was a big old house, with rooms that were hidden (completely, as in inaccessible, you could see into one through the back of kitchen cupboard, and the sockets on the wall in the room !!). The cooker was the hum dinger, so to speak. Oh! and we smashed the glass door of the cooker when it came out. Nightmare :sweatdrop:

The last tip a customer gave me was: "Don't wear yer skiis in bed" !!!!!
