I just got laid off and found a bit of work for myself, having never been self employed before I have no idea about how it all works. If I cert a job do i have to be registered anywhere or can i just use the certs from the back of the guidance notes?
I gave dozens of NIC certs for my old firm without a seconds thought and each time I ask someone I get a different answer and I'm struggling to find an independant information source.

You have to notify building control before undertaking works. They'll charge you a bomb, send someone out to test & inspect it and that's that.

OR, you can join NICEIC, Napit, Elecsa, etc., and notify jobs yourself. I think it's about £500/year, though there are plenty of people on here who are self-employed so they will be able to give you a more accurate figure.

Edit: You only have to be registered for domestic work, or commercial works using the same supply (cutout) as a domestic property (shop below a flat etc).

Depends what you are doing if its the local shop or commercial you can issue your own certificates. Its the domestic side that causes the complications. Anyone who is carrying out notifiable work and is not part of a competent person scheme has to notify building control before the job starts unless its an emergency and then its asap.
