Hi everyone,
just a quick question to answer if possible.

On my way home this evening, I got a call from a customer who said their power shower was not working.

I quickly passed by ( as its my little boys birthday and have guests round BBq etc etc ).

I looked in the cupboard and I saw a timeguard 13amp RCD spur which supllies a 2.5 flex into the shower. The shower is on the other side of the wall. The feed for the spur, is again from a 2.5mm flex into an BS3036 consumer unit.

I had a quick look at the shower unit and there are 2 water pipes going into it !! Hot and cold maybe ?? But if so, why does it need a supply ??

Like I said, I was in and out within 5 minutes, as I am cooking the food at the moment, but its bugging me

Has anyone seen anything like this before? I will go back on Monday to have a proper check and report back, but to summarise:

Timeguard RCD 13amp spur feeding 2.5mm flex into shower and RCd fed from 2.5mm flex from BS3036 board.
Shower seems to have 2 pipes going into it hot & cold maybe ??

Customer says its been working fine for the last 3 years since his moved in.

Any ideas guys and gals !! Must get back now, so speak soon.
Have a great weekend everyone,
Sav

Definately sounds like a power shower pump

I would check the duty rating of it as some are not continuous rated those that are not continuous rated normally have a thermal trip to protect the pump motor which may not auto reset

Hi Ung,
does that mean a new pump then ??

Best regards,

Some pumps may have a manually resetable trip

The other thing to check would be any inline filters ( normally a gauze washer ) for a blockage this can also stop a power shower dead in its tracks

Low water flow will prevent the flow switches operating if you have a good flow check the flow switches are functioning

From your initial description I'm assuming that the pump is not trying to run or is it humming but not pumping water in which case you would need to check if it is a capacitor start motor and then check the capacitor and centrifugal switch is not stuck open circuit

If you are not familiar with motors a replacement pump may be the answer for speed and cost effectiveness if the problem isn't easy to find

I would just work through the system methodically it all helps the learning curve when you solve the problem

Trying to cover some of the problems I've found may have overlooked some as you can understand there is no substitute for being there hands on

I have changed quite a few of these at work, because my time and inconvenience to tenant is more important than the cost I just change the whole unit, usually when you take the cover off the inside is covered black crap sure sign it's expired, RCD fused spur with 3 A fuse is the norm, usually 2.5 in and 1.5 to shower.
