Hi All

Have any of you got any experience of connecting up tower cranes on a large construction site. What is the configuration like?

I have been given the task of arranging the power supply for the crane and the site compound. This will entail submitting an application to UKPN. It is estimated that the site will need approx 230kVA.

Before doing so is there anything that I may be asked by UKPN or need to know regarding the power for the crane? All that I have at the moment is that the crane requires a 150kVA 3 phase supply.

I have the preferred location for the incoming and a site layout plan etc.

I was thinking more along the lines of the configuration from the service head to the crane.

I will not be making the connection however I would like to have an understanding of what would be involved as I will be required to co-ordinate everything during site mobilisation.

I have wired the one on our site it's a much smaller crane but it's just basic :

Come off the three phases to a suboard incorporating a RCD then off to the crane in SY with a 5pin connected to the end so the crane errectors can just basically "plug in"

cranes speak to tony.. he did overhead rather than.. what you mean by configuration?
When I say configuration I mean basically how it all goes together, what components/switch gear is required and where. i.e I assume with such a large supply a CT chamber would be required but if its temporary (only required during construction this may not be viable. Will check with DNO though first) then would it be a case of installing a switch panel which then feeds a sub board next to the crane base? Is power only required at the crane base or is power needed high up. Is it normally the case of the spark provides a sub board or what.

Im just trying to hear from a few other guys who may have experience in this field so I have an understanding before I approach the DNO and crane hire company so i don't have a blank look on my face when they start telling me whats required and why I have not done this or done that etc.

Many thanks in advance
