I work for a company which is not any form of electrical installer, and we've been asked to start installing external IP56 related screens. I need some clarification on what is sensible and legal to do. Ideally, we do not want to have to pay the cost of a certified electrician to do this. (Sorry, sparks !)

What we are considering doing is runnins a simple mains extension using 13a 3 core, plugging in the "inside" end into a standard wall socket and then the "outside" end will go into a standard twin socket which will be housed inside an IP54 enclosure; the enclosure is required as there's a 9v plug-pack PSU to power a video device which allows VGA to run over Cat5, and this unit will also itself be installed in the IP54 box.

1. Is it legal to run the cable in this way, hard wired into a 13a twin outlet installed in an IP54 box
2. Does this need an RCD ? it will have a screen/video convertor - nothing like a lawnmower etc which is why I suspect the RCD is required
3. If we cannot use a standard internal 13a socket in the box, can we use an IP54 rated socket ? I note that places such as maplin sell things such as this
External Socket Kit : Outdoor Wiring Accessories : Maplin and I think that what we're proposing to do is in fact just a version of this without the RCD as it's not portable equipment.

Would really appreciate clarity on this - we certainly do not want to do something illegal or unsafe.

AS long as you dont interfere with the fixed wiring, then you can do pretty much what you like.

Having said that, any socket outlet SHOULD have RCD protection now, regardless of where it is.

BUT, if you are literally just plugging in inside and running through wall to a suitable enclosure, there is nothing illegal about it, but possibly unsafe, especially if the internal sockets have no RCD protection up front.
