I saw a thread yesterday (can't find it now) about someone who recommended pre-testing domestic circuits before installing a new consumer unit, on the basis that a relatively straightforward job could get ugly once a new board was in and tests revealed existing problems.

I assume that the usual dead tests (continuity & insulation resistance) would be a part of this process, but is there a quick way of seeing if there are any earth leakages or shared circuits (landings) before starting... and are there other issues that could 'bite' that aren't covered in these basic tests?

thanks in advance.

I normally do continuity between cpc and neutral with a low reading ohmmeter. Then continuity between neutrals on individual lighting circuits.

Another thing that can catch you out is not assessing the clients existing appliances. Quite often if they have a 20 year old or so washing machine or fridge then these can give off enough earth leakage for the RCD's to trip upon completion. There is nothing more annoying than completing an fuse board installation to then tell the client they need new appliances.

I try to avoid this by testing suspect appliances with a plug in line RCD unit prior to commencement to illustrate my concerns prior to installation.
