I've come to the time in my life when I need spec's for doing most close up work, cable connections etc. Now the reading spec's I use are fine, except they keep falling off the end of my nose, whilst moving my head doing such work. Now I could get a pair of 'Joe 90' wrap arounds or some thick elastic bands, but I thought there must be some more modern alternative. I've done some web/forum searching and found a couple of companies, e.g. Prescription safety glasses and safety spectacles - safetyspecs.co.uk . I just wonder if anybody using something similar (dreading the responce :rolleyes4: ), they can recommend. And I will go to specsavers! :hand:

Hi Midwest, thanks for this. I know how you feel as I wear bi-focals and have to look at things close up with great difficulty due to the design of the lenses ie. 2/3 top for long distance and 1/3 bottom for close up. I probably need to get me eyes tested soon anyway.

Are you an employee or Self-Employed?

The reason I ask is my original trade is in engineering - lathes, Milling machines & other machinery.

In 1973, I was working for a company who supplied me with Prescription Safety Glasses because (they told me) it was law that they had to - along with safety boots & other PPE.

IF that is true and still the case, if you're an employee maybe your employer will provide you with them & you can save your cash.

Yea but the free prescription safety specs that I have seen our guys with still look gimpy.

Yes, mine were a bit Joe 90, but they didn't cost me anything and I only wore them when operating machinery, so it wasn't too bad.

Same with the safety boots - I never wore them to go dancing !! ;)

I will be self employed, so fronting the costs myself. It's just very annoying when connecting up a light fitting for example, looking down for a tool and your glasses slid off your head. So I thought I might get some glassess designed for the job so to speak. And although not to worried about safety specs (would follow H&S where necessary). I thought I would combine the two for ease. I can't be the only person who's come across this problem surley?

As previously mentioned, if you are an employee then your employer has to provide them by law. Reason for post: My old employer used to send us up to specsavers so there's no problem there. And safety glasses have to be a bit Joe90 as they should protect the whole eye. Not like my narrow lensed reading glasses I wear at the end of my nose so I can continually look over the top!! I'd just get some reading glasses in a frame you like and specify toughened/safety glass which should come with a scratch resist surface. Oh, make sure they come with "sprung" arms, grips yer heid nicely.

Oh! And Never,Ever try going downstairs/ladders with full frame reading glasses on. It sets off a Wobbly Bob feeling!!
