Hi all,
Today i came across a bit of a problem and to be honest not sure where i stand.
Was called to go and look at a small job, to add a couple of extra sockets to a kitchen. Nice and easy surface mount. When i looked at the c.u it had been installed april this year, so i thought great rcd protected, But when i took the cover off to test the ring found that the ring was on the non protected side of a 16th edition board. So i tested the ring wiring all ok except fot IR test which came back zero so taking spare meter to check IR again in the morning. I connected the ring to the rcd side and rcd will not set?. Now am i resbonsible for this fault because i found it or not?. the worst thing is that the customer is disabled and the company who changed the cu were employed by the local council through a grant, and they didnt leave a cert for the work, but she received the notification paperwork from nic.
HELP

you need to get the council involved. tell them you are contacting trading standards as the job was bodged and not up to regs. contact niceic as well. stir some brown stuff.

Before doing the IR test did you make sure everything plugged in or connected to that circuit was switched off? If you've changed the circuit to the protected side and the RCD won't start then you possibly have a neutral fault. Make sure your neutrals are in the correct side of the board!

Cheers

Re tested IR today everything fine, they had an spur for the stair lift in the wardrobe. i have now just done the work required and put it on the rcd side of the board, so my work meets regs. I made a note on cert about ring not being rcd protected and left it at that. I did also check that all the neutrals in the board were correct.
thanx for the replies.
