A friend of mines wants me to do a few little jobs in his house for him which is fine but i have no idea what to charge him for it .. He wants:

To replace a 28w enclosed light fitting.
A 45a pull cord changed as its not switching.
A replacement pendant in his hall.
And the bulbs in his cooker hood changed (something he could do himself but im happy to do)

I have to get materials for it aswell .. What does everyone think?

If its for a good friend charge materials and a pint lol about an hours work, if its a friend of a friend charge materials plus 10% plus your hourly rate :-)

another post about working for a mate. seems to be a tricky area for people to price.
personally, I charge materials at cost (usually plus 10%) then £20 p/h.
or
if said mate can do something for me, swap labour.

materials not hard to price up are they TBH, a copy of screw fix catalogue will do for starters. Then it depends on how good a mate he is doesn't it? BUT... don't work for nothing. Nothing is worth nothing, and the premise I operate on, is if you pay, then you can ask again.. even mates can exhaust their quota of 'favours'.

I don't get the opportunity to do many electrical 'hobbles' as they call them around here, but a local lady has had me do a few 'odd jobs' recently, things like putting together flat pack furniture, hanging a mirror, getting the cooker hood working (blown fuse).

She lives opposite, and always gives me £10-20 for an hour or two work and a beer. I never discuss prices before, she always pays what she thinks it's worth, happy with the setup both ways. I do it when I've got a free hour and I don't want any more work load than that as I work full time.

The point I'm making is, she pays, and can always ask again and use a trusted source of labour, rather than exploiting a friend or neighbour on a goodwill basis. Sorry mate, but a cup of tea and a biscuit just don't cut it.

I think it's been said, but fifty notes from a mate on top of materials IS doing him a favour.

And he can always ask again.
