Programable Roomstats

I'm rewiring someones kitchen, and they want to ditch their CH programmer in the kitchen, with a new programable roomstat in the hallway. I terms of wiring, do these stat combine the programmer & room stat, so I just need to run 4 or 5 cores (plus earth) from stat to wiring centre?

They haven't bought the thing yet & no idea which make they are going to get, but I need to install the cables.

The ONE I fitted only controlled the temp in the conventional way , but with loads of options for time on time off , weekends etc. As most people have trouble understanding the simple timers I have my reservations about them. I have only been bitten once . I would think carefully about it.

The ones I've looked at can be programmed with different set points at various times through the day. eg, 06:00 20C, 08:00 15C, 18:00 21C, 22:00 15C. For 'off' you program a very low room temperature so that it acts as a frostat.

For wiring, L, N, E, SwL should do it. Add another T&E if you want to be sure. Think about whether the hall is really the best place for the stat; the main living room might be better unless there's an open fire in there to upset it.

You will still need to keep/install some sort of timer for the hot water unless it's done some other way, eg a combi.

Bloody hill billy.

Those of us who live in the civilised part of Geordieland where we have indoor flushing netties have no such problems! :sailor:

Ummmph. I thought these programble stats replaced the timer programmer? Customer is looking at one of the Heatmiser- Wireless programmable thermostat PRT - W. Take it that there is a receiver unit that would need to be based near the wiring centre and the stat can go wherever with no cables!

They do - providing the boiler is a Combi.

I don't know of one that will handle a system boiler, but that doesn't mean that there isn't one - it just means I'm a bit out of touch nowadays.

No, all they do is allow up to 6 different temperature settings to be made per day. You will still need a central heating controller to "manage" the boiler.

We've been using a programmable room stat for over a decade now and they are a good idea.

Geordie is right. For the heating control you can just use a suitable programmable room stat. You may have to choose one that has all the functions that you need, eg 'holiday' mode, weekday/weekend, etc.

However, you may need the usual programmer/timer for the hot water control.
