Evening everyone,

I was made redundant towards the end of last year but found work straight away. I have been with this firm for 3 months and they have asked me if I want to be a supervisor. I initially said yes as it sounded good but now I am not sure. The money is not very good, less than I was earning as a spark on my last job but the hours are there to make up the cash. Is this a good thing? I'm not sure.

I am supposed to be having an interview soon but get the feeling I am not been told everything and am been pushed into doing things I shouldn't be as I am still a lowly spark and it might reflect badly on me from the other sparks perspective if you get what I mean. Also, I have only been there for 3 months, others have been there for years. Either they don't want the job or haven't been asked. Personally I don't think they have been asked.

The job would look good on my CV and help in the future development of my career. I want to get the interview done first before I decide what I want but have already been told I can work the weekend to sort out up and coming works.

I can't really give any more information than this as I haven't got any. What would you do??

Go for it..........You may or may not regret it but you'll never know if you don't do it, on the other hand give it a wide birth if you don't fancy it.

They obviously think enough of you to offer the position, so be glad about that.
as far as asking what would we do, everyones situation is different. some are happy just to turn up, do a job, go home and be paid. others want/need the extra money the new role brings.
it then becomes a case of turn up, take the cr@p when stuff goes wrong, go home, get paid slightly more for it. not everyone wants the money or extra responsibility/stress that role brings.

if you're happy with what's being asked of you, it's a no brainier.go for it, if not, just be happy you enjoy what you do and get paid for it

Your right, I might regret not taking it, I can always bugger off if its not for me. The thing with this firm is, I've never worked for one quite like it, they are always taking short cuts, rough as a dogs arse, no organisation, none of the materials required day to day in the stores unless it has been ordered specifically. I know I can do a better job, but it worries me that it is higher up the chain of command that is the root cause.

Can't wait for the interview to negotiate money!!

from what you've just told us, I think if it were me, I'd rather be one of the people that just turn up, do a job, go home. wouldn't want much more to do with em. I'd also be looking for another job...

Baptism of fire ahead mate.
Sounds like youre getting set up for a humpin.
But...........maybe you are of stern stuff and fancy a challenge.
Start negotiations from normal gaffer money, ie technician rate upwards. About 16.20 at the mo but thats 3-4 yr old.
My mate just got a start as foreman at 18 an oor cis.
If you take the job for what you consider happy money the ---- will bounce off you with a smile cos you just need to think about the money.
If you dont get good money you will forever be wondering, why me, and puting out feelers for something else.
If you stick it say 6 months and rap, you will have that on your cv and may need to explain to prospective employers why it didnt last.
So, best to get the money you want and look at it as long term (may be on same rate for years) and knock it back if the money is not there.
Dont take any sob stories about giving you 50p now and more in 3 months etc as you prove yourself, building up as the years pass. Go foor all or nothing.

Boydy

25+ years foreman

I'm made if stern stuff and do fancy the challenge but don't fancy getting dry humped!! I'm not into that!! I'm wanting to get on the Shetlands job, just waiting to hear about it but for stuff going on in my personal life I could do with been at home at the minute.

I'm not sure they will give me the money as listening to one current supervisor he's trying to earn ÂŁ45k this year and banging the hours in. Now I'm not bragging but last tax year I got just under ÂŁ48k without hammering the hours too much at all and that was as a lowly spark. I think I've got to aim for an extra ÂŁ1 to ÂŁ1.50 on my current rate. I'll let you know how I get on in a few days.

similar thing happened to me, i was with this company for 6 months then they promoted me to QS. Nobody else wanted the job but i thought it would look good on my CV as well as being a challenge. A year on and i'm very happy here...the other lads are not to keen on me telling them what to do especially when they age between 38 and 65, and i'm 28.

If you are made of sterner stuff, then you need to get some answers on your role in this matter too!!

Already on it mate, pulled things and people up already, maybe that's why I've been given the chance at the job??

Interview went ok, money better than I expected to be offered and about what I wanted. I will hopefully find out today if I have been successful. Not too fussed if not because I managed to line up something else yesterday! There is work out there if you look in the right places.

perhaps they realise they are as rough as a dogs arse and know your not, they may be hoping you have what it takes to turn things around, before I started for myself I was a foreman on other companies and did fine, have fun with the lads but make sure you always do the job right and they will fit in no problem, there will be one there always is who will need to be dealt with, but the vast majority of the guys will be fine if they think your a good guy and you do the job right, sounds like they need a kick in the pants anyhow if the work is rough, no leadership, get stuck in fella.
