Hi, working on a new penthouse installation, needs a new supply cable from the basement, engineer has specified 35mm tails. Gonna need to pull in about 40 metres of 35mm 3 core swa, never handled this stuff before but im expecting it to be fairly heavy and not easy to bend, the run is pretty straight but cant be run surface, has to be in the plasterboard wall, and then a few bends when it hits the basement. Anyone have any experience of this, Im thinking me and a labourer for two days to get the cable point to point and will we be able to lift it easily? there is a hoist we can use to get it to the top floor. Thanks

You know the route better than us, but I would say you would need maybe a 3rd man too to stop it kinking when pulling it out on different floors and maybe also to help you pull it futher on one pull.

2 Days sounds a bit too long, I would say allow a day for 3 or 4 men, preferably the ones you use will also have experience of pulling in long SWA runs like this.

Its only 40m a man per floor half a day max, I've run 80m of 70mm 4core in the factory roof in a morning with 3 men + 1 scissorlift, its all about running the cable out correctly so you have take up loops on the floor and looking at the run so the cable is pulled through any problematic parts of the run with the lowest length of cable. I.E. Don't pull 30m through a tricky point on the run see if you can run the cable in the other way and push only 10m through the same point.

Note this is bigger stuff than you are used to so ensure you are aware of all materials and other cables around the run you are pulling in it may only take a few meters of pulling to damage other cables etc if it is riding over / across them.

Loving the 'my cables bigger than your cable' theme .... well if thats the case i pull 50m of 35mm 4core in for breakfast just to warm up for the 240mm - they call me the cable guy! - could i interest you in free sky tv ??? but i only do it for friends!

My hands are bleeding from the CAT5 runs I had to get done today, I'm a broken man.

OP - seriously, just think/plan ahead, have three weetabix for breakfast and you'll be done by mid-morning coffee. 35/3 isn't the end of the world, there's much bigger out there that gets dealt with every day. Incidentally, do you actually NEED 35/3? Have you considered 35/2 if it's just single phase tails?? And even, to go one step further, if it's a domestic environment with an 80 or 100A incomer, 25mm would more than suffice anyway - might be worth clarifying this with the specifier. @40m 25mm will drop 7V at 100A load, 35mm will drop 5V at 100A...... and you'll never get anywhere NEAR pulling a 100A's!!!

You have it easy I had a hellish day of pulling in 30m of 2 core belden!!!

You'll have a much easier time if you can get the reel of cable up to the level it needs to go and drop the cable down. Pulling the cable UP in or around difficult obstructions could actually stress/stretch the cable....

Rockingit, it needs to be 3 core cable for main bonding purposes. The SWA's CSA will not comply for the installations main bonding connections, only as a CPC. The OP has been given a specified size by the projects electrical Engineer, so that's what he needs to provide!!
