Hi all, I am looking for some advice, I have a offroad race truck and want to install a push button start on it. I want to be able to have a mom button that when the engine is stopped will engage the starter but when the engine is running I want it to be inactive so it doesn't try to engage starter when the fly wheel is spinning. I know I will need a shutoff switch as well to shut it down. any info / diagrams would be greatly appreciated

Hi dude,a bit more information, regarding the vehicle and its' operating system, may assist a response. Cheers.

It is a Land Rover tomcat with a rover V8. There is no operating system, it's all purely electrical. You can say pre 1986 wiring. But like I said previously, it's being built from the ground up so any wiring can be adaptable.

...Right then,it would be a relatively simple job,to rig a start/run set-up. I take it you will have a run "switch",and the push button is to enable the starter?

This push button, would be wired through a simple interlock, consisting of a relay, whose coil is activated by a "running signal",usually the charge light,or similar. That is to say, when the engine is running at a speed high enough to extinguish the alternator warning light, the relay switches, and prevents the starter feed from energising the starter motor solenoid.

What V-8 are you using? I had dozens of these,in the happy days of banger racing SDI Rovers,i also put a P6 3500s V8 in my own series IIa ex-army wireless landrover.

It was the 10.5:1 cr engine, which was specced to use 5 star fuel...anyone remember that?

They were a copy based on the Buick engine, and were fantastic. Stretching oil relief springs,to raise oil pressure, and dressing rope oil seals on the rear-mains,was bread and butter stuff...

Thank you, that's exactly what I was looking for, I just couldn't figure out how to interlock the relay to prevent it being accidentally pushed while the motor was running, it is a race tuned sd1 engine. Running on carbs with about 250horse. Linked to the wheels by a disco diesel gearbox and axles, not a great top speed but acceleration is what it's all about.

Lovely...we were boosting and enlarging these yokes, way before Rangerover started...

I had one Vitesse SD1,but it was only level with the P6 engined one. I did plenty of early IIa and III V8 conversions, even the adapter plate,as i had a pal at the Royal Ordnance Factory, with gigantic lathes and jig borers.

I got converted to Jap,and never looked back...power,heater,awesome off-road ability...

If you can be racked...look up a book called Four Wheel Drives of the World, under the section "Nissan Patrol",there is a section on the GR 4.2 LWB,the 3 photographs are of my vehicle (at that time) with me at the wheel,at a 4WD festival in Abingdon,on the MODs' test track.

It is the worlds best job, after telling Egon Ronay,he has to add brothels to his inspection list :joker:
